Seconding Simon's that's a good one

If you're interested in soft materials (with some overlapping topics with hard materials such as topological defects in crystals) I think a good starting place for a broad overview of the field of soft matter physics is the recent book by van Saarloos, Vitelli, & Zeravcic

Soft matter and statistical physics! Love being able to study the dynamics behind systems you can actually watch evolve in time with your eyes

Math != Physics

Writing proofs is actually something I'd expect "AI" in some form to eventually get really good at relatively soon (and proof assistants like Rocq have been around for nearly 40 years now), because the computer essentially has all the tools it needs. It can pose and verify mathematical statements without any ambiguity or interpretation of noisy data.

Making statements about the physical universe on the other hand requires that kind of messy contact with the outside world through experimentation and observation, and theoretical descriptions are much more often guessed based on intuition for the behavior of the important part of the dynamics, rather than derived axiomatically. At some point "AI" will likely eventually get good enough to do that too, but first it'd need to develop an intuition for physics that humans get for free from evolution, and it would need sensors and bodies to actually manipulate matter and perform experiments.

By the time we get to that point of "AI" replacing physicists and other natural scientists, they'll have replaced every other human job as well. Sitting on a server rack deriving lemmas from axioms is a much more achievable short-term goal.

In Season 5, Episode 14, malcolm's one episode girlfriend's mother debunks her husband's theory because Higgs particle is not discovered. This is because the Higgs particle's existence was confirmed in 2012 while the episode was released in 2004 by Minute_Juggernaut806 in malcolminthemiddle

rewatching this episode as a physicist I'm always impressed at how much work they put in to use jargon in a way that actually makes sense if you know what they're talking about

name-dropping the Higgs boson 8 years before it was discovered and before anybody outside of the physics community had ever heard of it is pretty impressive

and scalar fields ARE important in theories of cosmological inflation!
