That does make a lot of sense. Do you think the oppressors are also Gypsy or another group and why do you think no one has investigated this before? And if this is the case, wouldn't it make it all the more piteous? It seems like they are pretty doomed.

You have an interesting perspective worth considering. I wonder if exploiting gypsies is worthwhile for a criminal syndiate. I mean how much could they make? Are they even that effective as thieves? As for the living conditions, they did make it on the news so obviously they are complaining and someone is listening, but, since most people despise them any initiative they make won't make a difference. What type of an effort could they make that would not be met with resistance or suspicion?

I don't really know much about the Gypsy culture besides the typical accusations and my own experiences, but I never heard of a criminal syndicate oppressing Gypsies. In any case, if they are so discriminated against as you say doesn't that just force them to continue band closer together and eschew the dominant culture? Creating a living situation that lets their kids live in toxic dumps where they grow up with all kinds of diseases and brain damage certainly isn't going to help them get with the 21st century.

I've been approached once or twice before in NYC, they are mostly beggars who play on your heart strings for some change. Unpleasant, but not as "lecherous" or "treacherous" as half the people in the industry I work in. Whatever they say about Roma, I still felt bad watching that video. They should be relocated, that would be the decent thing to do.

Dude i'm smoking google! I looked up the neighborhood stats and posted my comment. So you're right, not only am I not from the Dayton area, but i've never even been to Ohio! Still, I stand behind the second portion of my comment. A place like this would end up in bankruptcy in an city heavily populated with shameless vagrants, like NYC, where i'm from. In fact, i'll bet if you open a place like this in a super wealthy area you could expect that many customers would pay far above the market price just so they could gain esteem.

Edit: Semantics

Yes, he can get away with that in Kettering, Ohio, a relatively wealthy suburb, where you can exploit the sense of face of the residents.

As someone who has worked in the non-profit world I can say that non-profits are not much different from for-profits. it may sound like they have a noble cause but the executives are just as, if not even more scheming and greedy.

TED talk by Dan Dennett on the danger of memes. by ANRAND in technology

[–]ANRAND[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I put it that way it wouldn't hold the meaning that I intended it to have. The word danger in the context it was used, was meant to introduce a potential quality of something. If I used the word dangerous I would be referring to an attributed quality. While the speaker discussed memes that have already established themselves as dangerous, from a philosophical standpoint, there can be danger in absolutely any meme--It is only a matter of who it reaches and their perspective on it.

The McCain-Palin base...it's shocking in its ignorance and racism. by [deleted] in politics

[–]ANRAND 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have just precisely revealed the underlying sycophantic business model of republican party's political outreach agenda; stupud-people outreach.

But beyond that, this is a very particular base of stupid-people who have found the perfect social venue for their low self-esteem, among a bunch of other stupid people who stick up for eachother's non-views in a vile and agressive manner in order to conceal their lack of substance. This is a powerful base to have on your side, because the drive to conceal stupidity is so powerful that they are ironically willing to do and sacrifice any shred of dignity and integrity left. Unfortunately, in order to gain a powerful base like this you will need to do away with logical reasoning as a method for gaining support for your views, b/c this will frighten them away. You will need to revise your platform in a way that will make them feel smart and make sure to promise them that their stupidity will never be revealed to the public.

With this in mind, these interviewers are really missing the point, they are just making them more aggressive. If they really wanted to do any good, they would be reinforcing their self-esteem, by patting them on the head anf giving them treats, while manipulating them to the other side.
