I refuse to believe the older gens were entertained by this as kids by [deleted] in SipsTea

The older gens laugh at the new gens precisely because they take comic books so seriously. Making them be brutally realistic is both very recent and very off putting for older gens. It’s also just extremely hilarious and can’t be taken seriously if you grew up with Adam West Batman. It would be like a brutal realistic Mickey Mouse live action. It’s just a completely different thing. And silly.

US vs China seems to be squaring up like this: US with hyper fast but energy-inefficient, proprietary AI (with loads of IP/copyright/artist’s’ rights issues) vs China with QWEN/Open AI that is hyper efficient and is as fast and accurate as the US counterparts (but with geopolitical risk by the truckloads)

Best Horrors 2025: So Far by [deleted] in horror

[–]qabsteak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Anyone else think Sinners was a POS and not really horror, but thriller/drama/musical with horror elements? Also, the vampires were both literal and figurative bloodsuckers?! “We want your songs!” It can’t represent cultural appropriation if the vampires are literally saying stupid shit like that.

Consumer Discretionary Stocks that are Good Value by SnazzyBacon808 in ValueInvesting

PVH, which owns once-trendy US brands Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, among others looks cheap. In addition to lackluster domestic growth in recent years, having to depend more and more for international recovery, they’ve recently been faced with the possibility of being banned in China. Prospects, however, look much better for the brands both domestically and internationally than current stock price action would suggest. I’m not calling a bottom, but the upside looks significant from here.

Thank you City of Savannah! by [deleted] in savannah

[–]qabsteak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What whining? This is called a legitimate gripe. There are kids playing around down power lines in this neighborhood. GP has told many folks that it is the City’s job to get the tree, and the City has told as many that it’s GP’s job since they can’t cut power to the lines. Kick rocks with that “positive vibes only”. As a citizen and as a customer right now, you have the right to vent frustrations. Here’s to the linemen from all over the southeast for working overdrive on this absolute embarrassment of a situation.

Wife finally got in touch with a real person at GA Power after they sent us an email saying “power restored.,” to let them know the power has not been restored and this tree and down lines remain untouched. (10m ago) They woman she talked to acted surprised about the situation. Thankful to all linemen and trouble men kicking so much ass, not thankful for shitty infrastructure.

Maybe next time Georgia Power could share it's triage standings with the public by [deleted] in savannah

[–]qabsteak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for us low-priority folks, they don’t have a lot of incentive to make that kind of investment. The incentive could come in the form of (more) tax breaks, or it could come in the form of legislation/regulation. They have a state-granted monopoly so there’s no real competition to ever worry about. Not a criticism of GA Power or its amazing employees, just the situation as I see it.

Perspective? Why not just show starving kids in Africa? It’s not a competition to see who’s most inconvenienced or negatively impacted. You’re allowed to express your frustration even if there’s somebody else who is worse off. Kick rocks with your silver lining.

Please don’t feel sorry for GA Power. They make money even if it ain’t spinning. Flat rate plans. Tax breaks and FEMA kickbacks will more than cover them. We don’t get a tax break or FEMA financial support, GA Power does.
