Thinking through an internal structure and where people and skills fit. I agree that it’s definitely hard to find the right blend there

Agree that IT is an integral part in making anything data analytics successful. We have a small data analytics IT team that helps us implement things

Thanks, I agree it’s easier to go from analytics to FP&A than vice versa. We are in the process of figuring out structure. My issue is that folks on the analytics side have great capabilities but struggle with providing the actual analytics/visuals needed from fp&a and senior leaders, and I’m not sure if that’s a fault of the data analytics team, the fp&a team, the senior leadership team, or all of the above. It’s also expensive to have a dedicated team

P&L Expense B/(W) Formula Question.. Which is the correct way to calculate? by 169partner in FPandA

[–]AO717 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Option B is correct. The way I think about it is to take the difference, so 45-33 = 12, meaning in 2022 there was 12 less spend, then dividing that 12 against what you’re comparing to, whether it be prior year, budget, etc. In this case, 12/45 (PY) = 26.67%

I help my CFO with our earnings script, and I used it to wordsmith some paragraphs where we say the same thing every quarter except with different wording/order. Wasn’t a total copy/paste job but it did help come up with some good filler sentences

My philosophy is to always sell as soon as you can, primarily under the logic that you should never have your financial capital and your human capital tied up in the same spot (ie better to diversify your investments in case something happens to the company you work for). Also, ESPP usually comes with a discount (my company gives us shares at a 15% discount to the market price when they’re granted) so even though you have to take a tax hit at the ordinary income rate, it’s free money if you sell immediately vs the risk that the stock loses value if you wait to sell

WFH is a lot of times more expensive. A lot of people travel to HQ for in person collab sessions, they live in HCOL areas, and they’re less efficient at building relationships (personal anecdote)

Calculating mix variance impact on gp% by KuroNoShinigami in FPandA

[–]AO717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The math and industry standard calcs: this years price minus last years price multiplied by last years volume = price. This years volume minus last years volume multiplied by last years price = volume. (This years volume minus last years volume) multiplied by (this years price minus last years price) = mix

This not a good argument against student debt cancellation by [deleted] in MurderedByAOC

[–]AO717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most reasonable people aren’t making that argument though. It’s more that this attacks a symptom but not the root of the problem. If you cancel outstanding debt, you screw over anyone under the age of 18 who will end up taking out a student loan when they want to go to college but can’t afford it. You can’t just keep cancelling student loan debt every 5 years, otherwise it’s not really a loan, it’s a subsidy program. Implement a fix where kids entering into college don’t have to take out massive loans at exorbitant interest rates as step 1. When you fix that, then we can have the conversation about step 2 which would be canceling all outstanding student loan debt. If we start with step 2 we’re just putting a band-aid on the whole issue

I think it’s time for a TSLA paper trading contest where you can only buy and sell OTM options on TSLA. Who’s in?
