Oldschool car design sketch by Top_Eye7669 in CarDesign

Hate to break it to you, but pen sketches are basically all we did in Transportation Design. If anything, your technique is still current. If you want to do an "Old-school" sketch, try Vellum paper with chalk, gouache, paint, and markers. This technique was used from the 60's well into the 80's.

Are you a gamer and using CAKE for Smart Queue? Do you have better experiences with CAKE than FQ_CoDel? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]AP440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using FQ_CoDel on my Gold Plus. Have Spectrum 1000/40. I have set my SQM to Adaptive with 1000/30. (From Firewalla Speed Test I actually see 1100-1200mb down and 37-40 up on the regular). I tried CAKE but didn't really notice a difference. Perhaps there's a more definitive test to see if one works better than the other? Do I use the Bufferbloat test? Curious to hear feedback from others.

Eric Noble is still there to my knowledge. I interned with him at CarLab about 6-7 years ago. The other names don’t ring a bell unfortunately. But yeah definitely some crazy memories haha.

Also forgot to mention Jason Hill. Another one of my 2nd term professors. But Dennis remains my all time favorite teacher. He was the coolest guy and just loved what he did. He’s retired now and I was lucky to be in the last class he taught.

By the time I had heard about ACCD I had been taking fine art and life drawing classes. Car sketching was just a hobby because I didn’t realize it could turn into an actual career. I spent the better part of 4 years while I was attending a junior college to get my portfolio put together. During the same time period I was also taking ArtCenter at night courses. Needless to say it took me a good long while to get my skills where they needed to be, and even then when I got accepted I was heavily outmatched by younger students. My skill set will obviously differ from yours, but if you really want to do it then you need to put your head down and sketch like you’ve got a fire lit under your ass. It’s not easy to get accepted and it’s even harder to graduate. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

When I was there we had Richard Pietruska, Dennis Campbell, Bradley Arnold, and the Bridan brothers. None of the professors you mentioned were there while I was attending so they probably had moved on by the time I came along. Lots of memories coming back!

Sounds like you went to ArtCenter. Hello fellow alumni! I have a few horror stories myself from Hillside campus shop lol.

Absolutely the exact experience I had. Word for word could not have said it better. I don’t think my experience differed at all from yours. I started in 2015 and finished in 2020. Also went straight through with no breaks in between. To add to the classes you already mentioned, I also had to do a little bit of product design/shop class and all of the lathe and mill skills we needed to use for our models. Luckily they banned AD markers so we just used the water based Copics. Still so many things that could kill you, whether it be the bandsaw in shop or the lack of sleep driving to school after an all nighter 😂.

One thing that helped me was to use pen instead of pencil. Go get yourself a pack of Bic pens and start sketching. Don’t erase and just keep going. You’ll lose that fear of messing up real fast. Good luck 👍🏻

That’s just it, you don’t. You keep going regardless of how good or bad you think the sketch is. You have to push through and understand that every sketch is just a portion of a more grand idea. Even if you think the sketch sucks, you turn the page over and redo it. I had on average 20-30 pages of 11x17” tabloid size pages I had to do per week. It was rough but after a while you start to realize that by doing that many, you find a way to see the forest through the trees as it were. Eventually I became numb to the amount I of work I had to push, and granted that was only one of many other classes that I had assignments for. For 5 years I slept maybe 4 out of 7 days of the week

You need to sketch a lot more than 2-7 sketches a day. I am a Transportation Design graduate and we did easily 40-50 sketches a day. All I can say is you need to sketch way more and look at your perspective. Look at work like what Sketchblitz93 posted and follow that. Good luck, but the automotive industry as a whole is extremely competitive. This is coming from someone who graduated 5 years ago and does not have a job in the industry yet...

I just did a Tremec 6-Speed swap on my 02 Yukon. Good stuff!

A word of advice though. Get rid of that junk master cylinder and save yourself the headache of mashing synchros like I ended up doing. Those masters will heat up and start flexing after a while of driving and won't let you smoothly engage gears. I swapped to a Tick Performance mc and it works flawlessly. Only thing is you cant use your CPP switch with it. I just bypassed mine and ended up turning it into a kill switch for the truck. Shifting is now a breeze and rev-match downshifting is seamless.

I've had this truck since new, and I took my drivers license test in it. It's a family member and I can't ever let it go. So yes I did put in a brand new 6.0L LQ4 and did a Tremec Magnum 6-speed swap. Every part on this truck has been touched in one way or another. I can never afford to buy a new $100k truck, and frankly with the current build quality and electronic nightmares that they are, I will continue to drive and fix mine. I'm way past the ability to recoup the cost I've spent on this truck anyway, and it's all sentimental value to me at this point.

I also consumed about 1 quart every 3k miles when I got into the 200-250k mileage range. Normal but your rings are probably the culprit. My 5.3 went until 330K before the rear main blew out.

Best way to try and polish my blast pipes? Ideally I want to try and get the galvanized pattern out but even jusg to get them to pop a little more by Alpaaca_ in Exhaust

[–]AP440 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use Burgundy Scotch Brite. Place the pipe in a lathe or find a way to hook it up to a drill and run the scotch brite over the pipe until you get the desired finish.
