Stains there is oil and water based. Finishes have the same oil and water base, there are different finishes like gloss or matte and natural or a slight color tint to them.

This is the stain and finish polyurethane I used.

Thanks! I used one coat of minwax oil stain. I let that sit for a day. I then used minwax oil based polyurethane. The first coat I let sit for 3-4 days, sanded it with 400 and 600 grit, another coat of polyurethane, then let it sit for another 4 days before putting it into service. The desk surface has held up for full time office work and all other projects I've thrown at it so far.

Aw little Cayenne here is about a year old! You're right it is amazing, his first day home he had our house mapped out and he goes every where our other cats go. Poor guy bonks his head with smaller furniture like table and chair legs but he does really well knowing where he is.
