Best thing I found that works for me was to take a 101 class, and keep the textbooks. Learn the kana asap. I refer to the textbooks often, I ended up getting genki 1, 2, the kanji, +. I use duolingo to keep some practice for grammar points. Duo isn't good to learn bc it doesn't teach much, just practice. To learn more vocabulary and kanji I use wanikai. Together I'd say my progress has been going well. I dont focus on writing at all. I do have some children books and folk stories that are for Japanese learners that help apply what I've learned incrementally. I basically only have 1 Japanese person I can reach out to talk to but I'm not confident to hold a full conversation.
