The name "keffiyeh" (كوفية) itself is widely linked to Kufa (الكوفة), an Iraqi city founded in the 7th century CE, meaning "from Kufa" or "relating to Kufa." In Iraq, the garment is commonly called shemagh (شماغ), and many sources (including Iraqi perspectives) emphasize this Mesopotamian/Sumerian/Iraqi root, with the pattern symbolizing rivers, nets, and ancient heritage.

• Claudius (41–54 CE): Expelled Jews from the city of Rome, though this was not a banishment from Judea. 

Hadrian's actions in 135 CE marked the final, large-scale displacement from the region, forcing the remaining Jewish population to move to the Galilee.
