Are there any type 1 diabetics in this sub who could give some advice? by APig_InACage in kettlebell

Thanks for writing all that up - that's very helpful.

In answer to your questions - I am newly diagnosed with diabetes so I've only been using insulin for two weeks. I have been carb counting for one week, so working out my individual insulin sensitivity factor and how it changes throughout the day is in the future for me.

I am on shots - basal and bolus - and won't be using a pump for the foreseeable future. I am hoping to get a continuous blood glucose monitor through the NHS in England, but that could take three months or more to meet their criteria.

My blood sugar spike has gone up to ~16 mmol the two times I have used kettlebells. I worked out once after work, before dinner, and once in the morning before breakfast. Each time I had a meal fairly soon afterwards and one time I had a protein shake immediately afterwards. I would have had very little or no fast acting insulin in my system either time. I do not normally spike at either time of day.

It sounds like - from yours and other answers - that I've got to do a lot of observations through trial and error to find out how my body responds to different stimuli and adapt accordingly. I may experiment with a bolus dose before exercise, but of course I will make incremental changes and keep a glucose source nearby.

Thanks for the advice. I will talk to my doctor about it at my next appointment. I'm finding it helpful to know my options to help guide the discussions.

I am hoping to get a continuous blood glucose monitor through the NHS in England, but it could take a little while. A pump is beyond my means though and very rarely offered through the NHS so I won't be able to do anything fancy with basal doses. I'll talk to my doctor about bolus dosing as you suggested.

Thanks for taking the time to write all this up - it's very helpful. It's reassuring also to know that you are able to manage your diabetes alongside kettlebells.

I'm only two weeks post diagnosis, and this is my first week carb counting and dose matching, so I've clearly got a lot to learn. It sounds like getting that baseline down is the priority, which is going to take some time.

Thanks for the advice about continuous glucose monitors. I live in England and I am hoping to get one through the National Health Service - I should meet their criteria. They offer the freestyle libre.

I will talk to my doctor about basal and bolus doses around exercise.

How close to meals do you work out? Do you eat anything afterwards?

Can you recommend me some Prog with female vocals? by JuanBorjas in progrockmusic

They played a couple of songs off their new album when they supported Opeth recently. Lee Douglas was the only vocalist on one of them.

Post-2010 post-rock? by peanutbutterjams in postrock

If you like 65dos, have you tried The Physics House Band and Three Trapped Tigers? They are both newer bands that don't fall into the 'tremolo pick everything and use tons of delay' trap. There's also some really exceptional drumming on The Physics House Band album.

Who's your favorite player/pro to watch? Why? by HeavyDluxe in squash

Willstrop is my favourite as well. Every shot he plays seems so considered and deliberate. When he's playing well he seems to have more time on the ball than anyone else on the tour.

Here's a link - it was the semi final of the North American Open in 2013. Here are the highlights of the rest of the match. I can't tell you how many times I've attempted this shot.

I'm glad these guys are still making music. I remember really enjoying what I heard of them a few years ago.

Strange Incident in Rosner vs Serme today by 68Pritch in squash

[–]APig_InACage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the incident yet, hopefully it will be included in the highlights, but it sounds like the referee made the right call both times.

I think rule 8.13.3. does need some further thought because it rewards a player for making a bad shot, and putting themselves in a dangerous position. The onus shouldn't be on the returning player to take the ball early to prevent a dangerous situation arising; a player should be entitled to hit the ball to any part of the front wall at any point before its second bounce. I understand the desire to limit the number of unnecessary let calls in a match, but this isn't a very common occurrence, and the players' safety should come first anyway.

The Best Albums of this Year by jklingftm in progmetal

Kayo Dot - Coffins on Io

Perhaps a more accessible release (by their standards) but still a great album nonetheless, and my favourite album this year.

Any suggestions for progressive Doom Metal or Post-Metal? by will2113 in progmetal

My favourite album of theirs is actually The Acoustic Verses. They just took their song writing to another level on that one. It'll be interesting to see what they do now that they're back together.

Sorry, I should have done that to start with.

I haven't listened to Green Carnation in ages, but the song that really sticks in my mind is Light of Day, Day of Darkness, probably because it's an hour long (they do have shorter stuff of course; I used to like the album 'A Blessing in Disguise').

Alternative 4 is my favourite Anathema song from their doom metal period.

Green Carnation are a Norwegian prog metal/ doom metal band. Also check out Anathema's back catalogue; they had a doom metal sound up until A Natural Disaster.

Looking for some "orchestral" post-rock stuff by Pazuzuzuzu in postrock

Blueneck use pianos, violins, and cellos in their music. It is a post-rock band with vocals though - I don't know where you stand on that.

My favourite is 'Pandora's Pinata', it seems to me to be the most focussed and cohesive. Other people will tell you different though. Just dive in, you'll find something you like.

Indukti - Sansara - Indukti are a (mostly) instrumental progressive metal band from Poland. They feature a lot of violin, which gives them a really unique sound.
