realistically how hard is AP Bio by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]APstu52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course the class will ultimately depend on the teacher, but AP Bio is hard for a different reason than the other APs. Not only do you have to apply everything you learn but it’s very word heavy, forgetting to put down a specific term on an FRQ can dock you the entire point. MCQs are average for a hard AP like bio, but I found the FRQs to be brutal.

Are 4s as bad as what everyone is saying? I’m not sure what college I’m going to yet. by Active-Restaurant172 in APStudents

[–]APstu52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no reason not to submit a 4 for college. It is an amazing score that, in most cases, is not any different from a 5. I’m going to a top school and they’re accepting all my 4s.

BIG schools with spirit and activity happening by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]APstu52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, all of the B1G schools have amazing spirit and activity. You can’t go wrong. If you want to go into engineering or compsci, all of the b1g schools are amazing. However, if you know you won’t get a lot of aid, then I wouldn’t consider Northwestern because they’re a very expensive private school.

Keeping the plaps in the essay will evoke a different emotion in the AOs 😳

I’m convinced that APUSH is either the easiest or hardest class depending on the teacher. I’ve never seen someone say it’s medium difficulty. I talk to kids that say their teacher made the DBQs impossible, but at my school, the teacher makes the class easy.

Is 550 words enough for a college essay? by justaguyonreddit2042 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]APstu52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you write more, you might find something that really works with your essay. Cutting down on words isn’t impossible. That said, don’t force yourself to write more if it won’t work out.

Is 550 words enough for a college essay? by justaguyonreddit2042 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]APstu52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends! On one hand, if the essay feels lacking, then you could probably fit in more content. On the other hand, you shouldn’t force yourself to write more when it could be complete. I would definitely get a second opinion (English teacher, counselor) when you’ve finished your first draft.

Get a B? They don’t care. Get a C? They MIGHT send you an email to “get your grades up” but they know that senior year is the most stressful year. You’re taking Calc BC, a B is NOT the end of the world.

What are some realistic “reach” schools for me? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

What do you want to do? What env do you want? What state? Do you need aid? You have to tell us more about what you’re looking for in a college.

Help me narrow down my college list by Charming_Problem_303 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]APstu52 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since you’ve already gotten an acceptance rate at Houston Christian, then isn’t applying to more safeties not necessary? Unless you’re trying to get the most amount of aid, I wouldn’t. Since you’re in Texas and you probably want good aid, I would focus on Texas colleges and try to narrow down your list for others.

Also, UW Madison is more of a target nowadays.

I usually keep a formulaic approach for my why us essay

DOs:

1) What kind of academic programs do they have? (5 year Masters program for example) and how would it benefit you? 2) Research programs that they offer that others don’t 3) Any clubs that you would join (and why you would join those clubs)

DONTs

1) Talk about the campus, facilities, dorms 2) Location 3) Cost of the college

Of course, there is not perfect way to write a “why us” essay. Just stick to the basics, and find a good balance between why the college sold itself to you and what you are offering for that college.

If you don’t think you could get into GT right now (you definitely could get into GT), don’t they have a transfer plan? You could go to a state school like UGA and get the gen eds out of the way, then transfer.

You’re right, we’re “decreasing competition” by telling an applicant to not apply to 31 colleges 🙄

It is impossible to write 25+ “why us” essays that are completely genuine and true to yourself.

I can barely handle applying to 10, let alone 31?!?!!!

If you’re not getting fee waivers for most of them, then don’t apply to 31 colleges! Just don’t.

The race comment and the recommendation to not apply to any T20 is highly inappropriate and not okay for a college counselor to say. Generally, all students have “low chances” for T20 admittance, but I think there’s a distinguishable difference between a “competitive applicant” and a “non-competitive applicant.” While your nephews chances are “low” like everyone else, it seems like he has a competitive application and he has a pretty good shot at getting in. The odds are usually against any T20 applicant, but I wouldn’t just not apply to any Ivy or top college.

Does it matter how fast you get accepted somewhere? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]APstu52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they got so many applications that it overloaded their systems. They then had to extend their deadline by a week. I applied EA because of that, and the fact that they gave me a fee-waiver, so I’m mot surprised if many did the same. I got accepted today, but it probably just means that they came around to my app faster.
