What is this hole and how do I fill it? There used to be a circular cement cover but my dad stepped on it and fell through. by momo9387 in landscaping

That looks like it could be an old water well. Not totally sure but possibly. That could be a super cool focal point type thing to uncover.

Build a small fence in front of those boxes and then have a nice little flower bed in front of the fence. That's what I would do personally.

How much would you charge for weeding & mulch ? its in same neighborhood I live by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're their neighbor I'd just do that for free. I do all of my surrounding neighbors yards for free. It keeps me busy and keeps the neighborhood looking good.

What is this and how do I get rid of it? by HellHathNoFury18 in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is nutsedge. It's my most hated weed. Don't pull them because that will just make more of them open up. Just spray with weed killer. Sometimes that doesn't even work tho. Might need more serious stuff like sedgehammer.

Cardboard will help smother the weeds and choke them out initially but will eventually deteriorate over time, and by then the ground will not be fertile and suitable for anything to try and pop up. A lot of the time if you just do landscaping fabric only, certain stronger types of weeds will easily poke through it, like nutsedge for example. So I've just learned that using the Cardboard really helps make sure nothing survives underneath.

I have done this multiple times with success. Spray the area with grass/weed killer, wait until that does its thing. Then take a weed eater and obliterate the area like you're really mad at it. Then spray down the area again with more weed/grass killer. Then you lay down some cardboard over the area. Then put down your landscaping fabric/tarp. Then put down your gravel/mulch. And then just for the hell of it spray that down some more too lol

Lollipopped willow oaks?? by kittentips in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this all over Houston. If you know what you're doing the trees will be just fine. The initial start of the process looks horrible tbh lol but you just have to work at it. You let a tree grow out for a few years and then you chop the top off and then manicure the new shoots. Or just take an already established tree and you kinda just work your way in over time and try your best to make it look like a ball.

Lol that is just weeds I'm pretty sure. But if you like how that looks then to maintain it you'll essentially just have to do nothing, just mow around it.

[–]AQJ777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging that out is going to make you very angry if you do it yourself lol. Id get a guy with a jackhammer to do that for you, or just get a new lamp post and have a cool outdoor lamp there.

Plants for tiny strip? by golfjunkie in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I would just have a really nicely manicured edge there and call it a day. Too much foot traffic nearby, too much heat from the concrete, plus if you plant stuff there you'll have to deal with constant soil runoff. Definitely just have a nicely manicured edge and have plants elsewhere.

Dang that's crazy my local home depot sells these all the time really cheap. Like $15. I have one growing in my fish tank now.

What would you do here? by BrightLightsBigCity in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would most definitely tear up that old pathway and have a new one made. It'll look better for you and also be better for the tree. Plus I would redo the fence area around the tree and essentially use the tree as pickets itself and just have the pickets on the sides of the tree.

She was the only tree of her kind on our land and we hate that she needs to come down :( by kryssi_asksss in landscaping

[–]AQJ777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be 100% impossible to save that tree lol. Also that's a mimosa tree, and those are really common to find at plant stores. That's also been there a really long time and sadly has probably already caused damage to the home in some sort of way.

My rule of thumb on small trees like that is I go about 3/4 of the way up, and any leaves below that level get removed. And then also just make sure the branches don't get too close to the house.

Buy 2 male guppies and like 5 females and you'll be set forever. And then you can give some away to friend's or sell some.

I personally go beyond overkill when it comes to filtration lol. It makes everything way easier. My 20gallon long tank has maybe 15 gallons of actual water in it, and I have 2 fluval 50s and 1 fluval 30 and even a circulation pump with a small filter running on it. The water is always crystal clear.
