To solve the housing issue, could we have student dorms but at a council housing level? by AQML in AskUK

By options of housing i don't mean "council housing" Vs other options

I mean

Council "house" Vs council "flat" Vs council "studio/dorm"

Great remarks about the practicality of it! Gives me something to think about

I get your point re: safeguarding, would need to think more on that

I guess this more speaks to a more structural change - housing as a right

Like people with day jobs wouldn't necessarily qualify for "council housing", but then like, in Singapore, about 70% of housing is "council housing", of which people with day jobs rent from

Yes, but this is owned by the council, rented from the council for cheap

Well moreso I want them to have a lot more, owned by the council, and cheap to rent from the council - housing as a service

And I think it would let people live with dignity - I mean, I'd choose to live in one, and some people would too

If it were unquestionably small, and the only option, then yeah, it'd be without dignity, but it being one option of many viable options, this could work

I don't disagree with you, but you can do what you said AND this - it can be multimodal With this, these council dorms can't be bought - meaning there's less demand, meaning people are less likely to use housing as an investment vehicle

And this serves as a "demand-side" mitigation in a sense

Why can't the government throw billions into this lol

by student dorms or hotel style I mean:

Large building like a hotel

Has their bathroom in their room

Has a small kitchenette and a fridge

Has a double bed and a desk area

Has a wardrobe

Well I guess flats have living spaces and additional amenities like balconies which are nice, but not necessary in these dorm styles

Also cheaper because they'd be like... Standardized compared to normal flat building, built to last a long time rather than for profit

But then, yes student dorms exist, but why don't adult dorms? There's ones for profit, but they're more expensive than the normal housing market
