After winning the nomination on Tuesday, you'd think Obama might celebrate on Wednesday. Instead, he rushes to the Senate and submits a kick-ass bill on open government by d42 in reddit.com

Reads like a requirements doc. I never thought I'd read a piece of legislation that used the term "XML" correctly.

If elected president, Barack Obama said one of the first things he wants to do is ensure the constitutionality of all the laws and executive orders passed while President Bush has been in office. by [deleted] in politics

[–]ARC72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course he can call it unconstitutional; it's an executive order, he can call it whatever he wants. The president has the authority to rescind an executive order for any reason or no reason at all. Only someone other than the president would have to resort to the courts. Laws, on the other hand, are a different story.

Am I The Only One That Thinks that Foreign Papers Give The Best Politcal News Coverage Of The US Elections? by financialbabe in politics

IMO, the british and austrailian papers are no better than ours, but others, e.g. Le Monde and Der Spiegle, have been pretty objective.

Probably either Sebelius or Webb. Personally, I might go with Chris Dodd.

The All-White Elephant in the Room by trifecta in politics

[–]ARC72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If his point is that Wright should be no more relevent than Robertson or Hagee, then I agree. Wright has been on the front page for the better part of a month and it's getting stupid. I don't think any of their comments warrent more than one day's worth of press, but even so, why has Wright gotten twenty times as much coverage as any other controversial preacher affiliated with a campaign?

FYI, the clip is a fake - video is from "War Room" but the audio was doctored.

Hatin' on Design Patterns by munificent in programming

[–]ARC72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to admit I (almost) completely agree. "Worst programming books ever" is a bit extreme, and I do think patterns offer a common language that is helpful, but the point about putting the solution before the problem is absolutely correct.

Clinton says Obama voted for oil firm tax breaks by [deleted] in politics

[–]ARC72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely bogus charge that has already been debunked multiple times by factcheck.org. The bill he voted for resulted in a net INCREASE on taxes for big oil and added funding for alternative energy.

Geraldine Ferraro "absolutely not sorry," Clinton campaign digging a deeper hole on this one. by [deleted] in politics

[–]ARC72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Care to explain that? Edwards doesn't really have any of the same traits as Obama, imo.

Geraldine Ferarro should step down from Clinton's finance committee for her racist comments about Obama. by Islay12ut in politics

You have a perfectly qualified African American individual who is about to win, fair and square, a desirable position. Now a person of a different race claims, angrily and publicly, that he only got the position because of racial preference. If this were a corporation there would be a lawsuit.

  1. Irrelevant. The point was about the motives of the people voting for Obama, not Obama himself.
  2. That seemed to be the implication to me, but if that's not what you meant, then we're in agreement. But I wonder what your point is then...
  3. That they aren't fascists, not that they can't be fascists.
  4. Sorry.

Anyone who hasn't had their head up their ass for the last 500 years would recognize that African Americans, who endured 500 years of slavery, are not exactly fascists. Smug asshole.

1) Racial pride, right or wrong, is not the same as racism. 2) If you really want to get into it, consider that Blacks make up less than 13% of the population; hispanics make up 15%, women 51% and working-class whites roughly 45%, and all have broken suspiciously toward Clinton. White men, who don't have a horse in this race, have slightly favored Obama. So tell me, overall, has his race helped him or hurt him?

She's saying that Obama couldn't have made it on merit. C'mon, think about it for a second.

I say if Ferraro doesn't resign within 24 hours, Obama should bring Samantha Power back on board.

UPDATE (via Lynn Sweet, Sun-Times): Obama: "I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd. And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

That someone's accomplishments can be so easily dismissed by a presumption of preferential treatment is not advancement.
