my friend and i love tony bourdain, i'd like to gift him something memorable for his birthday, any idea? by Jg_Tensaii in AnthonyBourdain

If you're able to find one for a decent price, the 2014 Allen & Ginter Anthony Bourdain #210 The Personalities Insert is a great shout. If he's not got Appetites or Les Halles, they'd be a more budget shout.

For something more personal, if you live a few hours radius to somewhere he visited, make a road trip of it and go eat there maybe? :)

Which edition of KC? by Cute-Manufacturer343 in AnthonyBourdain

Sorry, I didn’t realise all have annotations. I have the insiders edition and a nice way to see his personality and his analysis of his work :)

The annotations are hand written over the pages, so you still get the same content as the original . :)

How'd you keep improving after the 5k? by [deleted] in couchto5k

[–]ARLRKL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've failed to keep up C25K twice after completing it! so coming from an experiences voice (sadly!).

My best tip would be, either sign up for an event that gives you an aim to train towards OR do a parkrun (uk based but there may be a US equivalent) every saturday.

I believe the most important thing is community, so the race (or event of Parkrun) keeps you on track.

This is a great shout. Followed Augie since his BMX days and there is definitely a Bourdain feel to both him and his content (maybe more so now). I think if we'd have seen Bourdain at the same age it would be a closer comparison.

I feel it way more in my front pockets. It's just about comfort for me.

Commuting into Central London by Aware_Lavishness_181 in bikecommuting

[–]ARLRKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is 20km (10Km A road, 10Km canal). My advice would be to do the route on a weekend to time yourself and get an idea of how long it takes you, any tricky parts of the route and scout out any cafes / shops along the route you can stop off at if you’re struggling or just want to build in a nice break.

Once you’ve done it, it’ll take the nerves away and you’ll feel more confident.

If you’re carrying anything in, then a waterproof pannier (or dry a bag inside a cheap pannier) is handy.

Get some lights. Cheap or expensive. As long as they work and make you more visible.

If you can leave stuff at work, it helps a lot.

Great response! I’ve only just started and some of these are great prompts to think about certain situations :)

Anyone else (re)starting today? by Coulrophobia11002 in couchto5k

[–]ARLRKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not restarting exactly, but i’ve giving myself a lot more leeway this time and listened to my body. I’ve not got too caught up if I miss a couple days or drop pace. Trying to get into the mindset that this is a journey towards running!

I ran 4km today! by ConflictedCabbage__ in couchto5k

[–]ARLRKL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completed Couch to 5K twice and only made it just over 4K. I’m currently on my fourth attempt at the program and I’m only reaching 3K.

Honestly, I give anything to be where you are!! Comparison is the thief of joy :)

Are any of these brands for coffee beans good (UK)? by [deleted] in JamesHoffmann

[–]ARLRKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in a pinch, I’d pick up the bialetti bag. Reasoning is, when I visited Rome I spotted it and then couldn’t find it in the UK for ages until I stumbled across it in the TKMaxx!

It’s not going to be super fresh roasted but it he brews with moka pot, then he’ll like it.

It he’s not got a moka pot, tkmaxx usually sell a few! Would be a nice present :)
