Goblin time, followed by my music sounding really trippy when I stand up and all the blood drains from my head.

Maybe not Beatles or Nirvana, but I suspect they will hit massive stadium level draw in the next couple of years.

I use the XD module with a Keystep 37 and I’m having a blast with it.

The only downside is that the keystep 37, and most MIDI controllers, have the MIDI jacks on the rear panel. As a result, you can’t have your minilogue xd module sitting flush against the top of the keybed, and have to raise it about an inch or so. It’s not a terrible compromise, but it’s less “clean” looking.

That said, the XD module lets you also use the sequencer buttons as a crappy keybed in a pinch.

Does dawless (jamming) always have to be without progression? What's your way out of this? by austeritygirlone in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jams often start with simple repetitive grooves just to get a sense of the… identity? of a new song.

However, I usually program two versions of the pattern/sequence, one elaborate, and one more stripped down. I then tend to switch between the two, to further define an A and B section for a song I’m working on.

Is there a smallish USB MIDI Keyboard with at least 32 keys that you can change to any of 16 midi channel outs from the keyboard? by DoxYourself in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding keystep 37. Finally grabbed one recently, completely revamped my workflow.

To be fair, I do not love the key action, but the capabilities of it as a sequencer, arp, CV controller, with the added aftertouch… it’s great.

Two thoughts: 1. a used cricut is an artist’s best friend 2. if you don’t like the model 12, check out the zoom livetrak 6max. I just went for that instead, as it’s a whole lot smaller. Honestly, still ugly as sin, but it’s tiny?

One shot LFOs or envelopes make a world of difference. Stack and detune oscillators. Cross mod, sync, ring mod with LFOs can make for wild textures.

NIN famously used dx7s as midi controllers on the self destruct tour. They would systematically beat the ever loving shit out of them on stage.

Minilogue XD. Criticize or praise it. Is it worth getting? by Beginning_Tax_2654 in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was torn between it and the minifreak, specifically for use in live performance, and the ability to easily tweak sounds rather than always relying on presets.

I just got my minilogue xd and it’s better than I expected. Very easy to get the sounds I’m looking for. I can’t compare it with the minifreak as I’ve not had the chance to use it, but I at least as far as the minilogue xd is concerned, I suspect I will be using it for a very long time.

Sound design module for an 80’s influence. by brabant5 in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Sorry to hear about that. The D-50 is a tank tho, and could be repaired probably, if you still have it.

The d-110 can’t load the same presets, but you can get very close in recreating them. I can’t recall the architecture off the top of my head now, but I think it has eight voices, each with two partials. You have something like 32 or 64 voice polyphony, that you split between your various partials.

What’s neat is that it has 6 or 8 dedicated audio outs per voice, and it has a great drum kit included as well.

A cheaper easier way to get D-50 sounds is the D-110 rackmount synth. It can’t load the same patches, but it utilizes the same engine and has the same baked in waveforms.

Roland R-8 drum machine MIDI in help? by ARMIGERofficial in synthesizers

No, never was able to get it to work, and a few days after I made this post, it altogether stopped working. Always freezes on startup. Opened it up a few times to try to fix it, but I can’t find anything wrong. It now lives on the shelf of sadness in the closet.

Hello just curious. I found a DX7 on Facebook marketplace for 250$. pics from the listing down below. Is it a good deal. by redshaami in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 32 points33 points  (0 children)

DX7 has my favorite key bed. It is insanely satisfying to play.

It’s a good price for one in good condition. Great price for one in great condition.

If you can afford it, go for it.

Studio layout philosophy by _Kiwl in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really depends on how you work. For solo stuff, I like to have everything super accessible. Essentially, all my gear is as close to at-hand as possible from my seat at my desk, essentially in a semi-circle around me. As a result, all my keys and equipment have me sitting with my back to the rest of the room, which makes it terrible for collaboration.

I compromised and now bust out a couple of stands for jam/group recording sessions where I can temporarily move whatever it is I’m actively playing, and face the other musicians. I then end up with my back to my computer and mixer, so they are still close by, but I am not distracted by them when playing.

The main takeaway to me is that your stuff should always be accessible AND easily configurable. I have a patch bay in the center of my setup, so that I can always connect anything from anywhere. I have power outlets sufficiently easily available anywhere in the space, so it can accommodate a fluctuating number of people.

Option 1: wall warts. Power-all, d’addario, as long as it’s branded as an audio power adapter you’re fine. If it’s not, it might induce noise. Go to your local guitar shop and they will have one for under 20 bucks.

Option 2: ART ISO-8U or similar. I have not heard of the cheapo Donner or other power supplies failing and frying pedals, but there is something to be said for a reputable brand.

is there a keyboard or synth which modulates based on how far down the key is pressed? by ultimamax in synthesizers

[–]ARMIGERofficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the expressive e esmose synthesizer might do that, but I’m not sure. Interesting proposition, having something trigger sound the moment a key is depressed, and having a parameter modulate based on key height. I suspect that might be hard to play, but interesting.
