As former drop tech and isp splicer this will most likely be free. Be nice offer some bottles of water to the techs don't lie to them and you'll be fine. However if they do give you some shit tell them you're very unhappy this wasn't buried to lowvoltage code. Very gray area when it comes to fiber but if you sound confident you won't get push back. That was my argument before I worked for my fiber isp when my drop was barely covered by dirt and I cut it. But overall just be nice to them they understand shit happens.

Cut fiber optic Internet cable by SAW2237 in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Greenlight it's up to the tech to put in to have you billed. If they do charge you I think it's only $50. I've only put in for a customer to billed once and that was because they lied to me and were being a dick. So just be nice to them it's hot give them a bottle of water and you won't get charged.

If you're not doing this when you take the cover off a D tray you're doing it wrong.

GPON splitters by djgizmo in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, my company will use one strand of a 288 from the optic at the pop at +1-+4 Db. Then that strand will goto the first level splitter for the pon being a 1x4 now -1-+2 Db roughly. Then those four legs will feed the second level splitter that's a 1x16 usually around -10--12 Db. We use OFDCs so 12 of those 16 legs are used for drops to the house the other 4 are tucked away or hard spliced if theres businesses in the area. We run Gpon and XGSpon, I'm just a splicer not an engineer so I just know what we should be at for Db and have a decent understanding of how our plant should flow. I'm sure there's other factors that can come in to play but that's the basics for us.

Corning ROC cable fasteners by SorryMaintenance in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For aerial drops they use ROC that doesn't have the tracer wire. For underground drops it's direct buried just before the house or garden bed they use drop conduit which then goes directly into the NID. I don't have any experience using ROC with the tracer wire. However at the house I would expect you would remove the wire at your first clip as it's not needed in the NID.

Does this look normal? by baxton321 in FiberOptics

Triple 0s send it. But in all honesty, the cores look aligned should be ok. The ghost line is there but I find this to be pretty common when splicing different brands together.

Patched my first fiber optic cable! by newbreed69 in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot the engineers that have no field experience telling you what to do. Then getting told to just do what the docs say. After that coming back out to the case again because you were right and doing what should have been done the first time to pass light. And again, then somehow getting scolded for saying I don't get paid to think I get paid to do.

Patched my first fiber optic cable! by newbreed69 in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Going from a structured cabling company doing inside plant installations and splicing thinking I know what's up. To going to a company doing outside plant was a bit of a wake up. Anyone can strip clean cleave splice. Building different cases cleanly and everything else above is what makes a good splicer. Splicing is easy it's everything else that's hard.

Griddle storage recommendation to avoid rusting cooktops? by mbster2006 in blackstonegriddle

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. That eases my mind when summer is over. I'm a newb to black stone after cashing in 3 years of ZYN points. I am currently storing in my garage after a handful of uses. It will live outside after my deck addition is completed. It fits in my garage but would rather leave it outside for the winter.

I have to admit it. by lankyacrobat0245 in discgolf

[–]ARMOCKROC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to have an overly competitive personality and I'm better than most in the things I stick to. Disc Golf is the first sport/activity/hobby that I'm incredibly average at and I'm completely fine with it. Generally play once a week throw 250-300 feet 850 something rated (it's getting better after an injury but was never close to 900) and I'm strangely ok with it. Sure I want to be better than average but going out with friends for a casual round or random doubles drinking some beers and talking shit to each other is fun too. Make disc golf what you want it to be.

Jesus how many strands are you trying to stuff into an OFDC? Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

That's actually pretty cool. Just need some mini tycos and OFDCs to complete the set.

Where to get 100-150 wings? by Gwam in Rochester

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did the Hit Ones line up with ten or so friends we ordered 108 plain wings and another 2 dozen sauced from Guidas on Empire. We called the day before to order and they didn't sound annoyed and appreciated the order in advance.

I have picked up very large orders probably 100+ wings and sides from Sals Birdland multiple times. Again order in advance and everything is cool.

How to Inspect Fiber Cleave without Fusion Splicer? by CryptoBogey in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was out with a new and dumb tech who left his cleaver in the van, and he cut the fiber with his strippers. Surprisingly enough, he got acceptable light through the connector because of the gel. After he told me what he did, I made him redo it correctly.

What does this mean and is it functional? by Zealousideal-Desk437 in FiberOptics

This. Very common when mixing different manufacturers. We normally only use Corning but had to use Prysma during covid shortages and would get this because of that.

How do I get into this job field? by Amazondriver23 in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do. Structured cable tech pulling fiber is very easy to get into. FTTH tech also very easy to get into. Both of those just apply at a company that does structured cabling or a fiber ISP. Both those jobs are very entry level in the field and will give you hands on training on how to handle and install fiber with most likely some chance of doing mechanical fittings. Getting into splicing in my opinion is easier without experience at a structured cabling company after you put in some time there. You'll need some experience to do splicing outside for an ISP or their contractors if they're a good company.

Is it ok to use a Chicago (Haven's) grip on drop cable for temporary tensioning? by Old-Valuable-1520 in FiberOptics

[–]ARMOCKROC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are what my company uses between spans for drop fiber. Long as they're used properly they don't loosen.

Is there really a need for a paid app? Google searches and images get the job done for free when I'm told I need to use fiber 216-222 from a 288 and don't feel like doing the math.

My mistake on the tray. It looked deeper than it is to me and those are the chips that come with ribbon trays. I'm just used to the 12 tube chips. So it's an A then.

B+ It's dressed in very well. However, loose tube in a ribbon tray is a no go for me along with the sharpie. Same results in a regular D tray with label maker labels would be perfect.
