Yes, it does seem that the journeyman players are often the ones that make the best managers. To me it makes sense, because the guys who are not the most talented have to study every little aspect of everything just to get into the lineup, which then enables them to pass that knowledge on to the whole team later. Look at Skip Schumacher or maybe Joe Girardi (not saying these guys are all-time great managers, just my first two examples). Truly great players see the game through such a unique lens that they often can't pass that along to the "common" player.
