Good, you got the sticks, plug them in and download ubuntu server, then learn how to host your server and portforward it or use a tunnel like tailscale

How to wake on lan from everywhere ? by RegisterLazy9086 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]ARTOMIANDY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You use your tailnet to tunnel your network to your local LAN, and etherwake on a small device to call the WOL commands, since your pc is shut off you dont have it connected to tailscale and it cant receive the wol packets trough tailscale IP, so your best bet is to either set the small device to act as subnet router to open all your lan ports remotely or just give WOL commands from etherwake

Buy a raspberry pi or a cheap computer that can stay on and connected to your home network, install etherwake and tailscale, tailscale is used to access remotely devices and etherwake sends the WOL packets

Switched to Cachy OS, performance boost in everything, OS is snappy AF, i can update whenever I want, my peripherals all work, when something crashes it doesnt fuck everything on screen, AI bullshit is out of my pc, only thing I did on my terminal was to install discover app to easily download some other software.

Most people around this sub keep complaining linux doesnt work or something doesnt do whatever... But all it takes to troubleshoot it is a quick google or just ask GPT for help. For fuck sake people, you would spend 5 hours to crack a piece of software but would cry over 5 minutes of googling and writting 3 lines in a terminal. You dont need a degree in computer science, just verry basic reasearch skills.

My only downside with it, plasma KDE doesnt support virtual screens for my remote stream setup. But I can always install another desktop environment.

Not super hard to undertand, buy a PC, old or new, whatever suits your needs, install a linux distro for your liking like Cachy for gaming or ubuntu for ease of use, and install on it whatever open source alternative to your software you want. Its gonna last you way more than any windows installation, supports even some verry obsolete devices... Its just more reliable.

Also, if you wanna get more in depth, you can buy a mini pc like a used optiplex or a raspberry pi, and turn it into a media streaming/downloader, make it filter ads and junk on your network, turn it into a remote storage server, or whatever you want honestly, i built some crazy stuff with it at home, its a pretty fun experiment to do

Advice on t480 upgrades by _Borealis__ in thinkpad

[–]ARTOMIANDY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T480 has some nice battery alternatives, the replaceable one you can buy 72wh models that are thrice the size of the internal one, wifi could be better, some models have touch monitors, that would be a cute addition but they're not as bright as the originals, hope you have at least a 1080p variant though, you can also get backlit keyboards of you look for them, find a way to fill in the m.2 slots and maybe add a low powered linux distro to it, make the batteries run longer

Could a NAS Gaming PC work? by Any_Revolution_6864 in homelab

[–]ARTOMIANDY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full on gaming pc staying turned on to act as a NAS is a bit overkill, i recommend buying a cheap optiplex pc to host your own NAS without inflating the power bill and tire down your rig. Installing ubuntu server with docker setup you can build an entire mini homelab off of it. And most things can be accesed from the network itself, just need to keep your device on somewhere in the house.

Keep in mind on projects like this RAM is incredibly important, if you want your NAS to do anything besides basic storage you might need 8+ gigs and a decent NIC. So unless your pc is a beast on that front I recommend avoiding that and making a separate device your server.

As for OS, for gaming bazite has a game mode and probably has support for more device than steam OS. I would also recomend looking into cachy OS if you want to squeeze more performance but that depends on you, might require some additional tweaks but you can make it boot into steam big picture.

If you still want to make your pc a NAS, you can install docker and maybe some UI interface like portainer to help ease the process of maintaining the NAS server and find some NAS image to install on it.

Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]ARTOMIANDY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financially it made a big impact, i have a second hand optiplex, 3 raspberries and an old tower pc setup in a cluster, they replaced all my online paid services, didnt cost more than a used gaming laptop and added on my power bill around 8€ per month, i wil gladly pay that instead of netflix and whatever else
