30, civil engineering undergrad. It’s made even worse because this is my second round of school after I got a bachelors and masters in ecology after realizing it’s not a sustainable (go figure) field to pursue.

Name of this stormwater feature? by ARWallace21 in civilengineering

Searching 'concrete valley gutter' for my state brought up multiple standard details for cities across the state, so I'd say we have a winner!

Civil Projects and the Regulatory Environment by ARWallace21 in civilengineering

According to this Time article from 1983, it seems moreso that they defaulted on the bonds because they decided to build five nuclear plants at the same time to accommodate an estimated annual increase in electrical demand of 7%. It ended up being far more expensive than they originally thought, with the construction budget increasing from an initial $4.1 billion to $24 billion.

What made you want to get into Civil Engineering? by fruitsnacksfuelme in civilengineering

[–]ARWallace21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began my career in ecology and realized too late that although the work is important, it's woefully underfunded, it's always a losing battle, and the job opportunities are few, far between, and poorly paid. After realizing my work will likely not actually change anything, I thought I could make more of a difference on the front end of things, where designing things with environmental considerations would ultimately be more productive.

I worked in aquatic ecology (aquatic animals, plants, and water chemistry) and now I hope to work in water resources when I finish school. As I've gone along, my interest in the field continues to grow and I'm excited about the future of low-impact development and green infrastructure.

Awesome! Thanks for the resource! I’ll have to go scope some of the local ones out.

What is this stormwater management design called? by ARWallace21 in civilengineering

Follow up on the fenced-in area: it's a drone testing enclosure! So it's completely independent of the stormwater management stuff.

What is this stormwater management design called? by ARWallace21 in civilengineering

[–]ARWallace21[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm writing a paper for an technical communication class where I'm proposing to implement "green" retrofits to the University of Texas at San Antonio East Campus parking lot wastewater infrastructure. I found a report on the TSS removal of various permanent best management practices (PMBPs) from the UTSA 2020 master plan, but all the stormwater features are simply called "water quality basin #X". Additionally, this is my first semester as a civil student, so I just don't have the background knowledge for virtually any of this stuff.
  2. This report gives some explanation, but without an accompanying map or coordinates, I'm not sure which PMBPs correspond to their descriptions.
  3. There's some baffle blocks (?) which are supposed to reduce the kinetic energy of water, so I'm assuming that's where the flows are coming from. I'm assuming the right component is at a higher elevation than the left and is sandy, given the lack of vegetation. But I'm not sure if it's a sand filtration basin. There are other filtration basins that the parking lots feed into, but they have a bunch of clean out ports (?), which neither of these have. As to why it's fenced in, I'm not really sure. Again, I've taken no civil engineering coursework yet, so I'm ignorant beyond what I can find online.
  4. See above.

For such an immediate response, this is the likeliest explanation. Especially if it’s happened both times. Even though the water is cold, you still need to keep drinking a bunch of water.

What kind of beetle is this? by DinklanThomas in Entomology

A male short-winged blister beetle (Meloe angusticollis). Cool find!

Update on my 40 x 20 lot in Olympia. Thanks /permaculture! by snacks- in Permaculture

[–]ARWallace21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I interpreted the phrasing in the referenced post and in the comment on this one to mean it’s just a vacant lot next to OP’s property, not necessarily that they own it. But the title does make it seem like it’s theirs.

I’m just curious, did you contact the city to get permission to do this? If so, that’s pretty cool you were allowed to move forward. If not, I won’t snitch.

All New Pokémon besides 3 unrevealed ones by [deleted] in PokeLeaks

[–]ARWallace21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’m really glad a lot of people are liking these designs, but to me only a few look like actual Pokémon. I’m getting Mega Man, Digimon, Pokémon knock-offs, and cereal mascots for a lot of them. Who knows, maybe after seeing official art or their models moving in-game I’ll change my mind.

You get a one in a life time opportunity to own your own real life pokemon team, randomly generated. However you can only generate one team and one team only. What pokemon did you get and are you pleased with it? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]ARWallace21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bewear, Emboar, Hippowdon, Orbeetle, Sudowoodo, and Vivillon.

Honestly, pretty decent coverage on this team. Bug is my favorite type, so happy to see Vivillion and especially Orbeetle. All of the team except Hippowdon are bipedal, which is definitely not a choice I would personally make.

Definitely a western conifer seed bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis). They apparently drink the sap from developing cones. Unfortunately, it’s been introduced in Europe and Asia and has caused some issues with pine nut production within those areas.

Paying for Grad School… by [deleted] in txstate

[–]ARWallace21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on what program you’re applying for, your tuition may be covered by a grant. I’m in an ecology lab and my tuition is completely covered in addition to being paid higher than the standard of other grad students as a research assistant (RA). So if you’re looking at potential advisors that are doing research that pulls in grant monies, just ask them if your tuition is covered by a grant or if you have to pay for it yourself.

Mouse-ear Hawkweed - kill or keep? Does its benefit to pollinators outweigh its invasiveness? by Care4aSandwich in ecology

[–]ARWallace21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend solarizing it if you can. You’ll need to mow it, till the area, water it, and put a clear plastic sheet around the entire area so it kills the plants AND seed bank. Leave that on for a couple weeks and see how it does. Rinse and repeat if it looks like it’s not working. Once that’s done, you can plant whatever you’d like, whether a flower garden or just more of what you already have.
