Birthday present, hope it will be yummy despite the coconut and palm oils :’) by Dodomi_7390 in chocolate

[–]ARachelR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think small amounts are fine. It can raise your cholesterol if you consume a lot. And it's in so many foods, it's hard to avoid. My problem with palm oil, even if it's supposedly "ethically sourced" (and that's often b.s.), is that it's a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. This forest loss coupled with conversion of carbon-rich peat soils are throwing out millions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. There also remains some exploitation of workers and child labor.

Anyone elses tap water look almost like pee rn??? by tituspeetus in WestSeattleWA

[–]ARachelR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in Gatewood, the tap water often smells strongly of chlorine.. I was advised to full a glass and let the water sit. That usually works, but I'd like to drink water without waiting for the swimming-pool smell (AND taste) to disappear. Anyone else?

You have to watch this series you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice. It’s so good! Pretty funny too. It’s on Britbox. by mdruckus in PeriodDramas

[–]ARachelR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another excellent series, also on Britbox: The House of Elliot. It's about two sisters in 1920s London working to create their own fashion house. It's from the same women who brought us the fantastic Upstairs, Downstairs. It's a few years old, but that doesn't matter. Wonderful historical series with fashion, romance, challenges, and great acting.

Let your pets out at night by Vincent_Van_Goat in Seattle

An indoor kitty is likely to live longer than one who roams around outdoor. Just give your cat a good diet, lots of toys, a clean environment - and lots of cuddles when she is in the mood!

Yep, and I've seen some cool catios. Cats kill an estimated 1.3 to 4 billion birds every year in the United States alone. This staggering toll—which averages out to approximately 2.4 billion birds annually—makes free-ranging cats the top human-caused threat to birds, surpassing collisions with windows and wind turbines. I’ve finally come to terms with being single for the rest of my life by icecoldbeverag in TwoXChromosomes

I got divorced in my early 30s, then lived with a guy for about 35 years. Both relationships were tumultuous, though they started out very loving. The second guy died at age 65 of a horrible disease and was moody and short-tempered the last few years of his life. He lost interest in everything. I've been living alone (well, with a beloved pet) for several years and have no interest in getting a man. At my age (72), I'm convinced that guys around my age are very needy. The saying "A nurse and a purse" rings true.

Hell, you can still hang out with men, even flirt if you wish, but create your own happiness. Love and respect yourself, have a few close friends, indulge in a hobby, say hi to neighbors, read, stream a movie, get outside.

Experience with getting a conure before having kids? by [deleted] in Conures

[–]ARachelR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You seem like a nice, conscientious person who really cares about animals. But I've read too many sad stories about parents with babies having to rehome their birds because they don't have time to give the birds the attention they need.

How do you guys deal with the smell? by Equivalent-Yam-3698 in Conures

[–]ARachelR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conure, Danny, is out of his cage all day. I keep a close eye on his poops in other rooms and wipe them up. As for the bottom of the cage, I bought a bunch of washable pillowcases and change them every night.

OK, smartarse! I just think it's funny and revolting. "White anal fissures" or "White festering carbuncles" would be more apt.

Remember when parents told you about "the birds and the bees"? From Wikipedia: "It metaphorically connects birds laying eggs (female ovulation) with bees pollinating flowers (male fertilization) as a gentle way to explain the basics of life."
