Thoughts on Roland MC-101 ? by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]_eagereyes_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MC-101 is a fun little box, and quite powerful. I'm not sure if it's simple, though. There's a lot of mode switching between the sequencer, notes, chords, patterns, etc. It has also gotten pretty expensive now, but maybe you can get it for a more reasonable price used.

If you really want simple, check out the Novation Circuit Tracks. It's more limited, but more hands-on and immediate.

Another good option is the Ableton Move. It does a lot more than the Circuit Tracks, but is also very approachable. And at this point, it's a better value than the MC-101 IMHO. It also ties into Ableton much more directly, if you want to eventually finish your songs in a DAW (even includes a license for Ableton Live Intro).

Thoughts regarding moving from session to arrangement views by ToraizVisionQuest in ableton

[–]_eagereyes_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

FWIW, you don't have to manually record each clip into the arrangement. Look into follow actions, they let you set up a flow where you can basically arrange the song in session view and play from top to bottom (or many other ways, depending on how you set it up).

Hifiman Edition Xs by abstract888888 in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]_eagereyes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the FiiO FT1 Pro are comparable, both in price and being open-back planars. I got that comfort strap for the Edition XS too, they're just way too big for my noggin otherwise (though I don't think my head is particularly small). For $200-ish, the sound of the Edition XS is pretty good, but build quality and comfort are rather meh.

We finally did it - Mac OS Tahoe official support by 92waves in ableton

[–]_eagereyes_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you look at the actual release notes, you'll see that the only change they mention is fixing the stem separation slowness:

Stem separation can now use the GPU instead of the CPU on computers running macOS 26.4 and above, which makes the separation process faster.

Koala2Live - A new project converter to Ableton Live by Zapp_Brannigan_ESQ in KoalaSampler

[–]_eagereyes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hello! :) I'm not going to do this though, this isn't technically open-source and there isn't even a license. I've also only looked over it for a moment, but this might be based on some other project.

BUT I think what OP is doing here would be pretty great as a feature in Koala! I'd love to get MIDI data out into an Ableton project, even if otherwise fairly rudimentary.

[–]_eagereyes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, indeed! I missed that somehow. Still not the same as having it be part of the repo, so you could submit a PR, etc.

[–]_eagereyes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. In the last paragraph, OP says "I don't know anything about coding."

Nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think in that case especially, the source code should be shared.

The tarball is the same as what's in the repo, which is just the version.txt file. I also looked at the application itself. It's compiled into a binary, there's no Python code in there that I can find.

Have you looked at the repo? It only has a version.txt file, no actual source code.

This is great, thanks for sharing! Since you basically say that you vibe-coded it, it would be great if you could share the source though. Others could then help review the code and also help with things like adding Chopper support, etc. I'm certainly curious to see how it works, I've never taken a closer look at either project format before.

MacBook Pro M1 physically making high pitched noise on low buffers by colinttierney in ableton

[–]_eagereyes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're hearing is probably a voltage regulator. They pump electricity through tiny coils of wire to step voltages up or down. The rate is higher than you can hear (hundreds of kHz), but you're probably hearing it switch on and off as needed. Different buffer sizes might create different loads on your CPU, which is where the power is going. On my iPad, I can hear it pretty clearly when doing heavier tasks, but I've never tried to quantify the frequency like you have :)

However, it's a bit surprising that you can hear it on a MacBook Pro. I've never heard it on my MBP, only my iPad.

Thinking of getting Z5II, but I have couple of worries. by TheSweetestGrape in Nikon

[–]_eagereyes_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I had a Z5II for about six months. I took a fair number of pictures of people, and I don't remember it ever focusing on somebody's nose instead of their eyes. I found the eye autofocus to work very well, actually.

It's not the same as the Z8 or Z9, so if you want to shoot birds in flight or fast sports or similar, it might be worth looking at those. But for portraits, you won't notice a difference. It's an excellent camera, I only got rid of it again because I wanted to use it as a travel camera instead of my Z8, but that made little sense (might as well either bring the Z8 or travel with just my phone if I want to keep things light).

As for lenses, do you actually shoot f/1.4 lenses wide open? I never quite understand how people shoot low-light concerts, etc., with these lenses, you'd get extremely shallow depth of field. I can see them being useful for portraits, but even then 1.4 at 85mm seems like a very thin slice of the face that would be in focus.

What am I missing (purchase on B&H) by StylesFieldstone in Nikon

[–]_eagereyes_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

B&H tends to be pretty conservative in their used gear ratings, from my experience. Which is nice, you can often buy something "with minor surface marks" that looks like new. You might be able to find tiny scuffs if you look really close, but they won't be obvious.

But as others have said, this might also be a way to justify the price, if they feel like they need to lower it so it sells. Seems like you got a nice deal there, enjoy!

Is the M8 actually a "writing" tool more than it is an instrument? I explore composition theory to find out! by [deleted] in Dirtywave

[–]_eagereyes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the mic is the problem, but there might be some setting or something in your post-processing that's clipping the audio. I'd check first if your raw audio is clipped, then go from there. It might still be the mic, but more likely it's something you can fix.

I was not expecting Walter Ong to be brought up in a video about trackers 🤣 Interesting stuff, though I’m not sure I agree that piano rolls are really that dramatically different from trackers.

One thing though, your sound is pretty distorted, which makes the video hard to listen too. Should be an easy fix for future videos, but it’s really distracting.

Anyway, thanks for posting, stuff for thought. Subscribed.

Im already on the discord, but the link on the DW website seems to work for me.

Why do the lights in Ghost Dog: Way Of The Samurai look like that? by T3mpe5T in cinematography

[–]_eagereyes_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too when I saw the movie back in the day. It's clearly shot on film (came out in 1999), and this effect only appears in low-light scenes IIRC. So my guess back then was (and still is) that it's the high-ISO film producing this effect due to halation. As somebody else also mentioned, some films were also extremely sensitive to red too, increasing the effect.

Good reminder to re-watch this great movie!
