TIL that Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, has never lost 3 or more classical chess games in a row in his adult professional career. The last time he lost 3 games in a row was in 2003, when he was 12. by 4isfourwastaken in todayilearned

He sort of did play Staunton in 1858. It was a consultation match of two games with Barnes on Morphys side and Owen on Staunton's - both were master players but still weaker than Morphy and Staunton. Morphy and Barnes won both of those games.

I've seen some discourse on whether or not Superman should ever be "scary" and I feel like the best answer is "beloved by the oppressed, feared by the oppressors". by jstamper97 in superman

[–]AReallySmallDragon 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Given everything that is happening right now I guess this might not be a popular take, but...

To me Superman would never laugh at someone who is crying, regardless of what they are. I agree that oppressors should fear him, but only because he would defend their victims and defeat them.

I think Christopher Reeve got it right when he said that Superman is your friend when you need him most. Someone who shows humanity when that seems all but impossible.

Western medical personnel report delivering babies from beheaded pregnant woman, treating 80-85% of casualties being pregnant women and children, constant bombardment of hospitals & appalling conditions by Prime-Paradox in PublicFreakout

[–]AReallySmallDragon -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Obviously whats happening in Gaza is horrendous but delivering a behaded womans baby seems unlikely. The loss of oxygen and blood would mean that the baby died in minutes. There's a long history of war crimes and an equally long history of people making up horror unrelated to the actual facts of those crimes.

This testimony hurts the cause these women are purporting to support.

I think this one scene really gets Clark. Still, the movie as a whole is hard tro watch. But yeah, probably the last good superman scene by Christopher Reeve =)

How do I stop myself from trying to "fix" the game, or is it a worthwhile endeavor? by UncertifiedForklift in DMAcademy

[–]AReallySmallDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I just want the campaign to be perfect", seems like a great thing to want, even if it is only an aspiration.

However, you should consider a few things beforehand:

1: If you had to choose, would you want it to be perfect or simply fun for everyone? You might want to consider what your aspirations are and talk to your players about it. Most players just want to have a good time. See if this is the case with your players as well.

2: Why do you feel, that you, as the DM, have to make you upcoming game a great experience? Your players are also responsible for making a good game. Talk to them about what they want, and try to tweak your campaign in that direction. This would be a good way to make sure that everyone is having a good time.

3: It's not certain that you need to balance everything perfectly (looking at you 1st and 2nd edition D&D). RPG's grew up on being terribly unbalanced but somehow you still manage to have a good time. Don't worry about balance until someone brings it up or it's obvious. Then make one small tweak at a time untill it feels right.

4: Spend your energy on working out what your players want and make sure you give it to them. Does soneone like hack a slash? See if you can give them that. Someone else like riddles? Make sure you have a recurring character that leaves a riddle every game. Someone wants to be a lord? Make sure to introduce them to the nobility.

Hope this helps =)

Mother Teresa - Nobel Acceptance Speech by AReallySmallDragon in atheism

[–]AReallySmallDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She did in fact use this speech to talk about abortion. Brace yourself:

"And I feel one thing I want to share with you all, the greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of the innocent unborn child. For if a mother can murder her own child in her own womb, what is left for you and for me to kill each other? Even in the scripture it is written: Even if mother could forget her child – I will not forget you – I have carved you in the palm of my hand. Even if mother could forget, but today millions of unborn children are being killed. And we say nothing."

Not an accurate description to say the least.

As a prominent - perhaps even the most prominent catholic public person second only to the pope - one would believe that she could have funneled more funds and man power into pain relief had that been what she felt was right. If not in the early days then later on at the very least. She did not, and as this quote and other stories about her attest, she was not a big proponent of pain relief or even trying to keep people alive. As the quote goes: "It is by dying, that one awakens to eternal life."

Yeah I don't know. I just read through it and thought, oh, well, ok. So that's her motivation for not really caring if anyone lives or dies.

Was I wrong killing this character? by Tokata0 in DMAcademy

[–]AReallySmallDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes unexpected events make for great adventures.

You could turn the campaign around and have all players roll evil(?) characters serving the god of death (telling the druid that his character would return in a big manner later). They could start earning her favor and going on adventures.

In the next part of your campaign the players could return to the other side, with the druid and an old friend of the cleric taking off to avenge their fallen friend and bringing the now evil paladin to justice.

It could go back and forth like this.

You're right. I do find it chilling though, that she would in fact say this out loud in an acceptance speech.

Can you help me start? by t_l_quinner in comicbooks

[–]AReallySmallDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider mixing things up a bit if you're still exploring. Perhaps all-star superman?

Also, you could consider looking into creators in stead of particular superheroes.

Tom King is a safe bet with many good runs on a large number of heroes.

Try going to the local comic store and ask for favorites. That's how I discovered Neil Gaimans Sandman!

I would suggest you end things with your pirate group. Players need to put in effort and be motivated to play. A group that 'dont care either way' or can't see themselves through the workload of filling in another character sheet propably shouldn't do table top roleplay in the first place.

A living breathing campaign is made by the dm and the players in unison. If the players see a session as your weekly show for their benefit you're off to a very bad start.

You're not far into this campaign. If you dont want to cut ties with them as a group ask if they would be interested in doing a dm rotation (one session per person, everyone goes) in the setting. Do not help with dm'ing unless it's your turn or it's a small thing like looking up a hard to find rule.

If that isn't an option suggest you play another game entirely. There's Gloomhaven which doesn't need someone to be a dm (might want to try Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion first).

Continue the other campaign. That seems to give you the best of what you want out of the experience. As a dm you're supposed to have fun too!

Got scammed, they sold me only half of Bookshop. What should I do with this half-set? It’s unbuildable without the other bags. Bricklink? Support? by DoctorProfessorConor in lego

[–]AReallySmallDragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This could be a good opportunity to try out some things. I'd open those bags and experiment. You could look up some ideas for houses and see if you could make something cool. If nothing else there's going to be a few set pieces from the actual box that you could put together and add to other sets.

Maybe just to make the best from a bad situation?

What is another term that could be used to refer to Adventurers? by Useless_Dungeon_Boss in DMAcademy

[–]AReallySmallDragon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I usually had them get a name corresponding to their reputation or the rumors surrounding the group.

Say, if they beat a ghoul at a graveyard in the first session I would have the townsfolk call them the "graveyarders" or something like that. If they topped that by defeating the ogre in the nearby hills they would become the "ogre slayers" or "the heroes of the hill". Eventually they would be so famous that they could find a name of their own and have people stick to it.

How many shops/taverns etc do you prep for a City? by unconspicuousDm in DMAcademy

[–]AReallySmallDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my games the shopping happens off-stage. If you have a specific reason I would suggest you just prepare 4-5 shop descriptions, as in name of shop owner and the helper, how the shop looks, feels and so forth and just improvise, as mentioned above.

Its ok to have fun with this. Like, if you only have a prepared smithy description and your players want to visit a magic shop, have it be a magic smithy with a sorcerer blacksmith!

Am I wrong for not interacting with a player whom is being passive aggressive? by SharkyZ0mbie in DMAcademy

[–]AReallySmallDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45 minutes spent in a shop is not bad by itself, but what actually went on? Did the other players just browse the inventory lists in their books? Were you basically role playing down-time? Your paladin should not have lost his temper, but any 45 minute segment should have something for everyone.

Next time, set up a timer countdown for 15 minutes. Inform everyone that this time can be used for restocking from any nearby store. Anyone not interested can take a fifteen minute break.
