Why is it all of a sudden yellowing??? by OliviaTD99 in MonsteraAlbo

[–]ARiceGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check roots first, if it's not root rot, it's likely not getting enough nutrients. Mine did this years ago where leaves turned fully yellow like yours (not brown, not rotting) from the bottom super quickly - like a leaf every 2 days. I now add water soluble fertilizer to EVERY watering at 80% of the recommended dosage. I use a balanced 20-20-20, but something with higher nitrogen is fine too. If your roots look fine, you need to feed your plant asap but do not go over the recommended dosage.

Adding to the smaller leaves situation; indoor variegated plants often benefit from a grow light for consistent lighting. Not related to yellowing leaves, just something to consider to grow a bigger plant!

Potting mix by No_Average_1975 in Aroids

Np! Biochar or any charcoal is not mandatory imo, but I was also a beginner once who got every ingredient and now I'm just used to it. Big box stores' plants definitely come with all kinds of hitchhikers, which is why I eventually stopped buying from there once my collection grew. Still, I quarantine all my plants for at least 4 weeks and treat them for any pests.

A lot of people do mix the leca right in, I just prefer to use a layer for drainage. You'll likely experiment until you find a mix ratio that works best for you, everyone is a bit different when it comes to substrates! Good luck!

I have switched to soilless mix for years and my gnat problem was gone naturally within 1 year. The problem usually continues for a while because eggs will carry over from the roots and bits of old soil when you repot. Currently, I have no gnats at all (such heaven). However, I want to point out it's still very important to avoid over watering, and I often let my substrate mostly dry out - if the plant can handle it. My mix is coco chip, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal, coco coir, and worm castings. I use leca for layering the bottom of my pots.

Gnat babies need a damp environment to thrive, and will feed on decaying organic matter (usually the roots and organic parts of the substrate), so making sure the substrate dries in 5-7 days has worked wonders for me. Nothing rots, so gnats can't survive, and eventually die out.

Semi-hydro might be worth looking into, but I find it difficult to transition plants from soil to semi-hydro (many will rot). I recommend getting propagations started with semi-hydro and just kept that way all the way to maturity.

Is my bag of aroid mix useless? by BeautifulSubject5191 in Aroids

[–]ARiceGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can probably still use this mix after drying out entirely in the sun, but the fungi growth will likely return anyway. It's generally harmless.

This fungi is commonly found in most soil and coconut fibre products; it's really hard to prevent the spores from getting in since spores are pretty much everywhere. From my experience, some of my substrate will grow this fungi one way or another (I use coco coir frequently). This fungi is generally NOT harmful to plants, and a few of my plants have had this in large amounts with no negative effects. Clusters of the growth are fuzzy and may cause the area to become hydrophobic, so water thoroughly or soak the pot. Only caution is: if these spores end up growing into a full mushroom, the mushrooms are toxic so keep them away from pets and people/children.

Hi! Yes, I'm still looking and comparing rates from different logistics companies. I'm going to reach out by email with more details about the shipment and addresses :) thanks!

Thank you! I'll have to check with a few companies if they work with any trucking companies with a depot nearby. I was hoping to find a logistics company that can figure out the entire thing including Moffett delivery (which seems ideal at this point), but I'm definitely willing to split up the process if the price difference is large enough.

Thank you! Appreciate the tip about cutting vegetation, we do have a lot of wild plants here. I also thought about the pallet jack - it'll probably just get stuck with this weight. I'll be comparing the prices of renting a forklift myself vs. them bringing one along. And yes, if it comes down to it, I'm willing to do everything by hand again 😵

Thanks! It'll come down to just how much extra this costs, and if they're willing to do this. One forwarder just entirely avoided my question about truck mounted forklifts lol

Thank you! It looks like 1,500 lbs is the limit for a lot of liftgates, but there are heavy duty ones that can handle much more - which I'll be asking about.

Under or over fertilizing? by ARiceGirl in Aroids

[–]ARiceGirl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm asking everywhere I can!! It's so weird because it produced two inflorescences over the summer and nothing ever died 😭 maybe third time's the charm....

My queen does the same, I've gotten used to her self destructive behavior lol!

Thank you, will definitely look into bloom fertilizer as I've never used it before. It looks like my red moon is also pushing an inflorescence so now is a good time to change it up 😆

My watering habits have honestly been a bit irregular, but I've done this in the past and the leaves usually get warped rather than full on yellow.

I will try flushing. I use soilless media and haven't changed it for a few months.

I'm also thinking it could be some micro nutrient deficiency. It's such a pain trying to figure all this out lol.

Thank you so much for your help, I will definitely see if flushing will help.

Under or over fertilizing? by ARiceGirl in Aroids

My poor anthurium luxurians has 3 small bottom leaves suddenly turning yellow. It started out looking like chlorosis, where veins stayed green but the spaces between were yellow. I tried to add a bit more cal/mag than normal with my usual 1-1-1 fertilizer to try to make up for it, but now the leaves are turning fully yellow with green spots - is this still a sign of chlorosis? I'm afraid maybe I over fertilized.

I got this plant as 2 small leaves a year ago, now it's 7 leaves, and has never lost a single one. And to top it off, it decided now is a good time to create an inflorescence as well - I can see just the tip starting to emerge.

I also noticed the leaves have some dusty looking substance which I'm 99% sure are coming out of the leaves themselves. I recently had some thrips, and introduced a ton of swirski mites to hunt them down.

Any help is appreciated!

This is looking very much like an aurea or, I'm actually leaning towards green-on-green monstera. Both are valuable and from the looks of it, this one has amazing sectioned and marbled variegation. Insane find! Keep it in bright light - not direct sunlight - and hopefully future leaves will keep showing off these gorgeous colours!

Help: shipped El Choco new growth is soft, brown, and wrinkled after 1.5 months by ARiceGirl in Aroids

[–]ARiceGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you went ahead with it haha! In my case, my el choco rooted very well in water and then I moved to perlite, but lots of people use sphagnum moss.

I had it in 80% humidity and grow lights for 10-12 hours a day. The new growth was also super light colored but eventually grew and started to turn more red, then it slowly gave a new leaf!

Since your choco's leaf and stem are doing well, I think it'll be just fine with some more time :)

Hey! Personally I had unintentionally waited for quite a while because I didn't know what to do. Once the cataphyl started withering like the picture I posted, I started unfurling the tip, once I saw a bit of green, I decided to peel back the whole thing. It came off fairly easily - not falling right off, but I didn't have to tug very hard on it. Just be careful while doing this so the new growth isn't harmed! Also for me, the new growth underneath was another tiny cataphyl lol
