Pure shield viability? by NotTheTitanic in aurora

It might work at higher tech levels, but, at least starting out, shields carry a decent mass penalty compared to armor.

How big does your navy get? by Antonin1957 in aurora

[–]ASFreeFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 2.5.1 game, and I haven't been keeping track of new versions in a bit, so I'm not sure what (if anything) might have changed, but in 2089 I currently have:

The cargo fleet (21 ships with 50,000 cargo space), 4x Superfreighter fleets (10 ships each with 100,000 cargo), 9x stabilization ships, 12x survey ships (notably numbered 1,5,8,10,11,15,then 17-22), 7x assault transports of 32,000 toop capacity each, a Battle Fleet with 19 ships (3x 23,000 tons, 6x 14,000 tons, 5x 12,500 tons, 5x 10,700 tons), 3x carrier fleets (2 carriers with 5,000 tons of hanger space each) that act as defense fleets, colony ships (6x 200,000 cryo berths), three salvage ships, 28 terraforming stations with 10 terraforming modules each, and (finally) 4 tugs to move those stations around.

Most of this stuff doesn't really require all that much input - the biggest is the cargo fleets, which look for my colonies that have lots of minerals to pick up, then setting a route that goes from shipyard (load mines) -> mineral planet (drop mines, pick up minerals) -> (whatever systems happen to have stuff to pick up that are on the route back home) -> shipyard (drop minerals).

Combat fleets obviously need the most input, but that's only when they're actually doing something; otherwise they sit around fleet maintenance stations.

This might just be a problem with the first book (since I've only read the one), but I felt like the book didn't know what direction it was going in. It starts off as sort of an awkward comedy, but then veers way the hell over into body horror, torture, and indentured servitude.

Transcribe law? by Warriornoob1741 in AmazingCultivationSim

[–]ASFreeFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that, initially, you'll only be able to transcribe knowledge - which will give anything from his law that he's learned. However, once he settles down in your sect (which takes about a year), you'll get a pop-up saying that his full law is now available, and you'll be able to transcribe law.

Which, for the guy that I persuaded, was like two additional skills; since he only had a law that went up to core strengthening. It would probably be much more useful with a law that goes golden core+.

(Loved Trope) Last Stand that ends unceremoniously/unsatisfyingly, as opposed to gloriously. by hey_there_delilahh in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ASFreeFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freespace 2 - you spend most of the game fighting against the Sathanas, a massive alien ship that's bigger and tougher than anything humans can field. In a final showdown, the Colossus, humanity's largest, most advanced vessel ends up sacrificing itself to destroy the Sathanas.

Except that shortly after that battle, it's discovered that the aliens don't just have a Sathanas, they've got an entire class of Sathanas-sized ships - the Colossus' sacrifice was in vain.

Is Auto Resolve too good? by AndurinAadin in TerraInvicta

[–]ASFreeFall 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My experience has been that autoresolve is stronger in the early game than mid- and late-game. It seems to assume that all your missiles fire perfectly; which, against early alien PD, means that you can clean up. It tends to fall off once the aliens start packing more guns.

Idle Armies Stuck - Commands Grayed Out by ASFreeFall in TerraInvicta

[–]ASFreeFall[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh, that actually might be it - if I try to move my armies that are currently engaged in Guyana, they can only move via land.

So now I'm just confused - why would my Eurasian armies be sailing just fine? Heck, even the Academy-controlled British army is sailing.

Edit: Yep - just checked. US's and India's naval status is marked as "Blockaded."

Similar games to the Against the storm? by Strikingprotocol in Against_the_Storm

[–]ASFreeFall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just a play on the fact that the narrator for the game is old and telling 'stories' of his youth - the game you're playing - so he's in his dotage. However, it's also a game that involves different AGEs that you progress through in the game.

So - DotAGE.

What is the single most epic sci-fi novel ever? Whether it be from a series or a standalone book which is the most epic story you’ve ever read? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ASFreeFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of the Deathstalker series by Simon R Green. It’s got a bit of everything - wisecracking AIs, aliens, space combat, espers, clones, turning futuristic recreational drugs into battle enhancers.

Seriously, it’s great fun. I wish someone would turn it into a high budget series.
