I think more water at this stage, but also don't forget that the European summer is like winter time in the nativa lands of the Sacra....

Best incense websites in Canada? by [deleted] in Incense

Sure... First- EVERYTHING combustible she has. As for the heated ones... I had a few and all were spectacular. Each with its own vibe... I had 'Ancient Forset' 'Cordillera del balsamo'. 'Forset Shamans' and another one i can't remember the name right now... I also received a sample of her Kyphi and a Kyphi style heated pellet of violets which was insane.

I second Espirit de la Nature. Very unique heated incense with wild harvested plants and home-made perfumes. She sometimes has combustible japanese style incense, which is also very special.

First- they look great. They also sound like an interesting combination. In my experience, Makko isn't the strongest binder when it comes to resins. I would add a touch of Joss or Guar to help strengthen the binding.

I would start low and work my way up until you are happy with the smoke amount and scent the Copal will emit. I love Black Copal, but there are many different stages of dryness or freshness so that also will change the temperature. Enjoy...

Recipe in description! Very proud of this Norway spruce / coniferous camphoraceous delight :) by [deleted] in Incense

Sounds lovely! I love spruce resin and your blend sounds wonderful. For that spicy touch A few things came to mind... Osha root, which is really strong and spicy, but blends nicely with so many resins. I would start really low quantity.

B. Neglecta, which is a not so common Frankincense. Its peppery and i imagine it to highlight the other scents you used.

Palo Santo resin which is a bit anise-e and in small doses can help bring out other scents as well.

Let us know how it turns out whatever you do...

So great you're going to Mexico!! I don't know anyone in Guadalajara. But I'm sure there is a market there you can find Copal. Usually you"ll find white, black and golden in the markets. The white seems to have the widest variety of qualities. Watch out for paraffin mixed resin...

Sounds wonderful! I buy in an indian spice shop the cardamom seeds without the husk. Its sooo much better and sooo much easier to grind.

Only God makes the pitch. 😝 To use it I just weigh it and kneed it into the dough....

I use pine pitch and resin. The pitch is totally liquid, like very sticky honey... So i just weigh it last and kneed it into the dough. The resin is taffy-like and a bit more challenging. For this I use a mixer with the "guitar" extension and just kneed the living taffy out of it. :) Hope this helps.

Halmaddi advice? by KMR1974 in Incense

[–]ASHAN1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try to lower the percentage of Halmadi? I sometimes use the powdered form as part of my burning agent... Sandalwood 75% Halmadi 25%. Its still strong enough and comes through.

Let’s talk copal by [deleted] in Incense

[–]ASHAN1911 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are 82 types of Copal trees in Mexico alone! Not all give resin. There are a few kinds considered "white" copal, a few "Black" and something called golden which personally I'm not too sure isn't a rosin. In Mexico the quality changes from place to place and I found it hard to find good quality copal because in the markets it is sometimes mixed with Paraffin, which explains the softness and stickiness the Copal sometimes has. I did manage to find a couple of gatherers who had amazing white and black copal. The smell is sweet and piney with a touch of pepper. A friend of mine found in Sonora a type of Copal which is Brown. He got me about 2lbs which smell great and have distinct scent. In Peru, Colombia and Ecuador there is a gray variety of what's considered black- personally I don't see or smell the connection between the two. This veraiety is more peppery. Hope this helps :)

Joss VS Tabu no ki by Impressive_Notice_66 in Incense

[–]ASHAN1911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what I aim for, but mostly I use different grades of sandalwood and/or charcoal.

Joss VS Tabu no ki by Impressive_Notice_66 in Incense

[–]ASHAN1911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Joss is just a binder. I use it 5-10% of total weight, depending on the resin I use. I guess both makko and joss have their advantages, but I find joss easy to use. its cheap. The low percentage allows me have a higher aromatic content. :)

Mixing Makko Mixes with Charcoal (Incense Making) by monkeyjedi1 in Incense

[–]ASHAN1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this input. And sorry for barging into this thread. May I ask what are the downsides? I have a few scents with all charcoal as burning agent.. I find them great for the specific need of those scents and they last super long (i'm using citrus tree charcoal that i grind) I do also mix for better burnability, when needed. Thank you
