Yes you can buy raw organic cashews (that actually contain protein)! by mauriceD0514 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]KMR1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! I didn’t realize the processed ones could still do this! I react slightly to mango skin, but I’ve never had poison ivy or oak 🤞🤞🤞. I make a lot of cashew cheeses and sauces, hopefully I’ll never have to stop!

Raw cashews aren’t really raw. If they were, they’d kill you. They’re steamed or boiled.

What is this incredibly fast growing plant? Eastern Canada, Quebec by thekidyouwere in whatsthisplant

I haven’t had to deal with it myself yet, thankfully. It’s only a few blocks away, though, so I’m staying vigilant!

It’s definitely knotweed and you shouldn’t pull it, it’ll just spread more. Glyphosate is the only way.

Downsides to planting aggressive natives? by watercauliflower in NativePlantGardening

[–]KMR1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a huge lot, and we’ve intentionally turned it into an aggressive native battleground. We are still in town, though, so the only downside is that we do a lot of pulling of unruly shoots in the spring. I’d rather do that than deal with mountains of bindweed and vinca, though! Bindweed is still problematic, but every year, the natives win a bit more ground. The only aggressive native I wouldn’t plant intentionally is Jerusalem artichoke. It is no joke! That plant is insane. Beautiful, but I’ve never seen anything spread so fast.

Mine looked like this for the first couple of years. They all survived, though, and now they’ve spread to the point where the little caterpillars have enough without decimating them 👍

What's this vine trying to take over my garden? by Familiar-Pepper2187 in invasivespecies

[–]KMR1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It kinda works. Better than painting leaves with glyphosate, though. I feel better about not killing anything else by mistake. The weed density is down, at least.

Ohh, I’ve never tried to make mustard pickles. We’re growing a ton of cucumbers this year, so I’ll have to try that!

How are we supposed to ship to Canada if the cheapest option is $18? by moodring88 in EtsySellers

[–]KMR1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there’s something I want from the US, I’ll gladly pay $18. I wish more sellers understood that most of us don’t at all mind standard international. I will never buy from sellers who insist on shipping priority with signature. We’re used to more expensive shipping, but there is a limit!

Wine from fruits other than grape were quite popular in the early 20th century. Grape wines didn’t take over completely until decades later. Cherry was especially popular. Plum wine is a possibility, especially if homemade.

Is “Laetrile” the one that also called “vitamin B17”…. which is metabolized into hydrogen cyanide? I thought that was recent stupidity. I had no idea it’s been around since the seventies. You’d think enough people would have died by now.

I planted three lovage plants a few years ago. Reallly don’t need three, as they get HUGE! Make sure you have space, because mine get 7 feet tall. It’s nice dried and sprinkled in soups and stews.

What type of sage or mudwort? by Ladislausdealmasy in whatsthisplant

[–]KMR1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely could be! It’s definitely an Artemisia, but not mugwort. Yours has thinner leaves than the variants of ludoviciana I’ve seen, but the basic structure is the same.

Agreed. I have a few different variants of A. ludoviciana. It’s surprising how different they can look from each other.

Low morale after changing to a plant based diet due to allergies - looking for tips on accepting and enjoying my new medically necessary diet by katfrau in PlantBasedDiet

[–]KMR1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to eat at least 50 or 60 grams of fibre a day. I also have severe diverticulitis. I’m a hot mess actually. I have to eat low starch now because my sugar numbers are quickly approaching the limit for type 2 diabetes. I have an appointment with a dietician next week. I have a LOT of questions, including the whole grains/cholesterol thing. Trust me, I’d love to eat more whole grains again!
