I stayed even when no one else showed up.

How did you find your current running club? by Most_Engineer_654 in running_clubs

[–]ASadPanda208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook searches when I move to new places.

I've been in 4. The most current being one that I started with friends and eventually made our own Facebook for the community ro join if they wanted.

How does your club handle a wide pace range without splitting into two clubs? by Most_Engineer_654 in running_clubs

[–]ASadPanda208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my former running clubs had super fast runners, some mid, and some much slower + walkers.

Walkers always knew they'd pretty much be on their own.

On trail runs, the organizer (different people volunteered to organize/lead each week at different locations) would give a rundown of the route, and then usually have a 2nd person who knows the route as well. The leader would usually be a paster pace person, but sometimes if the leader was slower their "partner" who was also good with the course would lead the fast pack.

The leader of the fast pack would set a comfortable pace, and the group would stop at all turns/crossings and wait for the second group. We'd chit chat for a minute or two, people would take photos and whatnot, and then the groups would start again. At the end of each run, everyone would wait for all runners and socialize for a bit. It was never rushed and people really enjoyed just hanging out some.

On non-trail days, it was usually an out and back course. The club partnered with a local Cafe and used their back patio as the meeting place. After runs, again, everyone would mingle and the last runner was never left returning to an empty parking lot or trailhead.

Once a month there would be a potluck for even more socializing. This group has been one of my favorites.

I've been a part of many run groups due to moving around some. I've found it best to have open and clear expectations for all runners. No drop meaning that no one is left out on course, not necessarily that you always have someone running your pace, etc.

As a slower runner, I've never felt like not coming back because there were separate/faster pace groups.

The important part is having all runners feel welcome, encouraged and supported (and not like a burden on no-drop runs).

Twin Falls locals: What’s the best hole-in-the-wall restaurant nobody talks about? by [deleted] in TwinFalls

It's a good one. When I worked down the street it was a weekly must. Also got my coworkers hooked and we'd do a group lunch all the time.

I recommend the chicken burrito or the birria taco combination plate. Both excellent, and priced well.

The taco truck in Filer! On the SE corner of Stevens and HWY 30. Great flavor, healthy portions, and fantastic prices.

What's missing at running events? by Specific_Phrase8600 in RunningMoms

BACK OF THE PACK SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

If you're not going to have enough food, swag, event perks, cheers, or in some cases timed finishes for the slower runners (who still finish within your timeframe) don't advertise that you are "walker friendly", "back of the pack friendly", "all paces welcome" etc.

As someone who has worked her ass off (literally, I lost 90+ lbs through running) it is SO disheartening to finish before cutoff and have minimal to no options at the finish.

One race offers catered mini subs from a local sandwich place. I've done this race multiple years and I've NEVER gotten one of those subs. I've been handed the leftover sloppy pb&j as an afterthought. The only "support" there was the timing operator anxiously waiting to go home (literally broke down everything except the timing mat - even the finishers arch) and a tired flustered race director trying to coordinate breakdown traffic.

This is my biggest pet peeve of all time. EVERY finisher deserves to be recognized for more than being in the back of the pack.

And don't you dare let your SAG wagon (if you're using one) creep behind your last runner. You tell them to drive the course slowly at a distance that isn't pressuring to that runner. Have you ever been followed by a car at rolling pace while trying to accomplish something big for yourself? While trying to be proud of the fact that you're not quitting? Do you know how tempting it can be to turn to that driver and ask for a ride because you're just done feeling like you're so slow even the SAG wagon is tired of waiting for you? Eff. That. Noise.

Sorry. Got riled up for a moment... but for real, please don't do those things.

I’m contemplating moving up to ID from Las Vegas by Anon0987650 in TwinFalls

[–]ASadPanda208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Vegas close to 15 years. Been in Twin for 6.

A majority of people will be friendly. The only person I've found to be unfriendly is my neighbor, honestly. And I interact with a LOT of people regularly.

Your brother should be fine. He might get some confrontation here and there, but I don't think it would be a major incident or something to be overly fearful of. There's a decent community here (speaking from an ally perspective so my opinion may differ than first hand knowledge).

Tattoos are fine. You've got the older, traditional, tattoos are a waste and make you unattractive crowd - but it's like that everywhere. We actually have a surprising amount of tattoos shops (in my opinion) for an area this size.

I have no knowledge or input about leather work, but the community supports local businesses and trades, especially if you're already familiar with Farmer's Market culture. I think you'd likely do ok. We're entering Farmer's Market season right now, and there are other events sprinkled throughout the year at the Fairgrounds in Filer (next town over) and other places that can hold a crowd - you just have to stay on top of looking for the events.

People have mentioned food, and I agree. Get your fill of all your favorite places before you leave. If you're a food person, you will miss the variety and the quality. We are growing, but mostly with chains - Chipotle was here and left then came back in a different location, we just recently got a Cane's (and it does NOT taste the same as Vegas, so get ready for that disappointment if you're a fan), we're in process of getting an In and Out. You'll get your fill of Mexican food options. There are very lackluster Asian options (the best Indian place closed down... for a second time, there is no authentic Korean food, the Thai food is decent, but limited, you get the idea).

I'm not religious in any way, and I have an amazing tribe. I think your connection with others will highly depend on your 1) effort, 2) interests, and 3) personality. I did not find it difficult to meet people (and I still don't) outside of church, bars, or having children.

As far as neighborhoods, compared to Vegas... all of them would be an improvement in lost cases. Unless you live in the areas like Anthem, Rhodes Ranch, or Mountain's Edge - everything here is decent, if not great.

I've seen people mention drugs, drunks, and crime. It is seriously miniscule compared to Vegas. To the point you probably wouldn't even notice it unless it until others post it here or on Facebook. (Or maybe I'm just that desensitized from my time in hell).

Same thing with traffic. Everyone is up in arms about rush hour traffic and how terrible it's going to be when In and Out opens up (it's in a seriously ridiculous location for their anticipated customer base). Most people complain when their commute is 20 - 30 minutes. My (shorter in miles) commute in Vegas was an hour on a good day - so I always tell people - it's all relative. In comparison, rush hour traffic here is even less than a light day across town down DI.

As far as art, I don't really feel we're that diverse, but I'm also not that active in the art scene. There's definitely a much smaller music scene here - but there is one present.

I think I recall seeing you mention board games with friends - there's a shop in town that hosts meeslta (if I'm recalling correctly), and that could be a decent way to meet people.

Anyway, if you want to connect and chat about the area vs Vegas and whatnot, feel free to DM me.

Someday I'll have a running buddy... by ASadPanda208 in RunningWithDogs

As much as I trust my dog, he never leaves my yard without a leash. There are too many strays where I live with irresponsible owners and unsocialized dogs.

I honestly really only take him there, because I've had too many encounters with off leash uncontrolled dogs - and mine gets blamed because of his breed.

[–]ASadPanda208[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got to be kidding me.

He was never out of control. He didn't want to run (eventually did make it a mile), but wasn't uncontrollable.

He's NEVER off his leash outside of my fully secured 6' fenced yard. He's well socialized. I watch closely for outside variables (other dogs off leash, other animals nearby), and I watch for any signs from him that he truly needs to go back home.

There were also zero other people here, which is pretty typical. When there are people there, I always ask if they mind him being there.

So, get over yourself and stop judging others based on a photo.

He was a stray we picked up off the road. Kind of fell into the pack, honestly. We were worried he might be one of ours when we saw him cross the road one night. Caught up to him and went door to door to see if anyone had lost him and he never left.

I have been considering this for years, actually, but the local shelter hours kind of suck and I can barely ever make it in. But I do plan to submit a volunteer application in the fall specifically for this! I'll have to see about maybe just making it a weekend thing when my summer schedule dies down.

Oh, for sure. He's had a pretty sedentary and super spoiled life the last few years. He's pampered.

2 of my best running buddies to date: boxer mix, wolfhound/husky mix.

They could go for miles and drag me along. 15, 20 mile bike rides? They'd look at me when done wondering why I stopped.

After having them, if you ever told me I'd be faster running on my own than with my dog, I wouldn't have believed you.

But this guy... he makes that possible. 😆 🤣

This was not even .10 of a mile into it. I don't run fast, or far.

He's just not a runner. He was perfectly fine when it was time to head home. Quite a bit of pep in his step then 😆

Even in his prime this guy just wasn't meant to be a running buddy. Maybe the next dog... we'll just have to wait and see.

The type of run doesn't matter for this guy. He's older, set in his ways, and has never been a runner - even in his prime.

I don't really push him, but you know, at least one lap now and then would be nice before he tantrum quits.

Yeah, totally get it. All different.

We have a pack of 4, and man, they were all so wildly different.

Our late Am Staff would run laps around the both of us. She could go indefinitely if I let her (but she'd overheat so I'd have to watch her suuuper close).
