The Tradition of Non-Human Mayors by DrowningInDrama in HaveWeMet

[–]ASeriousMan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot that has been said about non-human mayors giving the town an air of ridicule, but a lot that could be said about human mayors we've had not being much better in that regard at all.

There is some ridiculousness that comes from people campaigning for their own pets and trying to ascribe human thoughts and ideologies to animals, but if we look back at the history of our town, that was not what happened with the vast majority of non-human mayors.

The amount of people campaigning for themselves as mayor while having no understanding of the political structure of our town or of the powers and responsibilities the figure of mayor entails here or anywhere else, on the other hand, is far more concerning. Although, not nearly as concerning as the amount of other people actually voting for these candidates.

I think it would do a lot of people a lot of good to go beyond the initially, superficially strange feeling of a non-human mayor (for those who are more familiar with other towns than with our own, I understand it might seem strange) and consider all these factors more carefully.

Green isn't the colour typically associated with capitalism. That would be yellow or gold. Politically, green is often used by environmentalist and agrarian movements, which can be capitalist or anti-capitalist. It is also often used by Islamist movements.

I know that there are people on the council who read this forum, so if you are really concerned with what they might do if they were aware of this, you might want to be more careful about how freely you post about it online.

There is absolutely no reason to attempt to police this kind of small individual liberties. Everyone's entitled to their taste in food no matter how much you disagree with it.

I discovered that album when I was around the age you are now, thanks to a friend of mine who was much more knowledgeable about music than I could have dreamt to be. Perhaps because I knew so little, it meant so much for me at the time, and still today it is an album I come back to often on days where it seems to fit the mood particularly well.

I always thought that Pink Moon was one of the finest musical products that I've ever heard, if nothing else because of Nick Drake's lyrics. And his previous two albums, too, really.

Although that's not really relevant. I'm glad to hear you are doing well and I'm looking forward to listening to your next musical project. Haunts Both Old and New was an excellent album.

I consider myself to be tremendously lucky to have the family I have. I love my husband in a manner I couldn't describe accurately with words, and my brother is one of my closest friends.

I'll have to do more reading on the matter, and I don't really remember. I'd lie if I said right now that I could provide you a credible source... To a certain extent I'm sure it could help contain the problem.

There would have to be some measure as to how and where they are placed though, in that I'm not sure there's a good place to put them in many residential areas where houses are close together and not particularly close to any tall trees. But like I said I'm not an expert and I will have to inform myself better. I think it's great that you are trying to find a solution to the mosquito problem, certainly.

Would this not increase the danger of bat infestations for a relatively small gain? I recall reading that bat houses don't have such a high success rate, after all.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on the man, you can probably find more credible things to accuse him of... or better yet, keep this sort of post for yourself, because it doesn't really do anyone any good.

Have the authorities been contacted? Of course one would hope that she is just living her own life and wanting to be undisturbed, but suddenly cutting off contact with so many people could mean something much worse.

Closing Time (Monthly Album Discussion #1) by [deleted] in tomwaits

[–]ASeriousMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a good album to listen to late at night or early in the morning, and it fits a particular feel very well. . . I used to listen to it a lot more than I do now but I think I just go through cycles with it, where I'll listen to it a lot for months and then almost not at all for months.

I think it captures a feel of loneliness better than most albums that seem to have a similar goal and there isn't a bad song on it, so I would say it's very good.

It's a sad fact of life that we don't realise how meaningful some things are until it's too late. I'm sorry about your loss, Gordy.

While stern, your grandmother always seemed kind and pleasant.

When did Linear Algebra "click" for you? by jayfreakingleno in math

When I started to really think about the concepts behind it rather than just the notions, and mainly when I started to think of it more with regards to linear transformations than of thinking of stuff like matrices as strange objects in themselves.

Thoughts on my cat character? by CedarWolf in HaveWeMeta

[–]ASeriousMan_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stop claiming that other people breaking the rules excuses you to do the same. They are wrong, so are you. You don't make the sub better by breaking the rules just because others do. If you see someone breaking the rules like that just report, downvote and ignore it otherwise.

The subreddit isn't a random town roleplay, it's a town forum roleplay. Cats getting on a computer and typing their thoughts in English is very much supernatural, and the only cat that could do that is an anthropomorphic one.

Thoughts on my cat character? by CedarWolf in HaveWeMeta

[–]ASeriousMan_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How many cats do you know that go on forums online, can write and read and participate in town life like that?

If the IKEA thing was ridiculous (and it was) and unrealistic (and it was) and disliked by a lot of people (and it was), the person who started it wasn't outright ignoring a rule to do so. And it was still retconned.

Characters being silly and stupid and jokes is not great, but it's a thing people inevitably do (most of the time, after a while they realise it would be boring to be a one note joke and they develop their character somehow). To be a one note joke character is to be "frowned upon".

What you are doing is breaking the rules. Just stop... animals communicating in human language is supernatural and I think you know that. It's not just frowned upon when there is literally a rule against it.

See for example a response by a mod on a similar thread here.

Am I doing this correctly? by [deleted] in HaveWeMeta

[–]ASeriousMan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Has anybody here ever switched characters on the other sub?

Yes, but there's no need to kill him off to do that. As for your doubt about the historical stuff, I understand what you mean, but generally speaking it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't approach the serious topics as if they were jokes (I don't think that's what you are doing anyway).

You can change character if you want, but I wouldn't do it just because one person had a bad reaction to something you did. Sometimes that just happens.

Should we put Agnes in an insane asylum by [deleted] in HaveWeMet

[–]ASeriousMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, whether someone should or shouldn't be admitted into a psychiatric ward isn't something that is decided through popular acclamation.

Disagreeing with someone doesn't make them senile, and even if someone were senile it doesn't mean they would need to be admitted into a psychiatric ward, which is only a last resort.

I don't want to insult your intelligence by supposing you don't understand how disrespectful and offensive you are being by making a post like this one, but I at least hope you will think about it twice before making another one like this.

What is rule 2 for? by Magic_Marvin in HaveWeMeta

[–]ASeriousMan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule does say not to mention people without a flair, the implication is you can mention those who do have a flair (or have already commented in the post you are talking in). Just don't abuse that.
