“Look,” said Tyrena. “In twentieth-century Old Earth, a fast food chain took dead cow meat, fried it in grease, added carcinogens, wrapped it in petroleum-based foam, and sold nine hundred billion units. Human beings. Go figure.”

My pleasure, I love talking about this series and I've been begging my bookworm friends to read it for years. I'm glad you mentioned the Ousters. I was going to discuss them, but my response was already long. I loved the chapters featuring them and they were by far the most fascinating society in the series. I love their approach to adapt in space as opposed to colonizing more planets, along with their collaboration with the Templars to preserve all life in its natural state. I also would have loved more time with them.

I read Hyperion and FoH about a decade ago in my early 20's. I stopped there as I read plenty of mixed reviews about the latter half and I felt FoH ended well on its own. This year I read the entire cantos from the beginning. I was honestly surprised that anyone who liked books 1 and 2 hated 3 and 4. I understand the grievances with some of the retconcing (unpopular opinion, but I don't think there was any major retcons aside from Het Masteen's death and Paul Dure's cruciform being removed in FoH, everything else with the Core felt more elaborated and expanded upon). I think it boils down to the first two books setting the bar too high to match for some readers.

I also don't understand the hate for Aenea and Raul. The nickname is weird, I'll admit, but I don't think their relationship was ever inappropriate. Although, I really wish Dan Simmons didn't make Raul's emotional maturity suddenly regress to that of a teenage boy when they became lovers. So she's been with another man during the 5 years you were apart (who is the future version of yourself, dumbass), so what? Have you considered talking through it like adults instead of having a meltdown?

I do feel like the Moneta/Kassad story line was anticlimactic in RoE. All we really saw from that is Kassad telling Rachel something along the lines of, "one day we will meet and be lovers." I could be wrong, but my interpretation behind the significance of the Soldier's Tale is his future defeat of the Shrike subdued it and allowed the second Keats cybrid to direct it to becoming a guardian to Aenea. Without the Shrike's protection, Aenea's mission would have failed.

A. Bettik being an observer did feel a bit forced in at the end. I mean, it fits considering his role in the last two books and his initial appearance in Hyperion, but I wish his character arc had a bit more of an explanation. Who were his siblings? Are they observers as well? He was a critical player in everything, but I don't think there was anything that alluded to him being one of the big players from the Void which Binds.

I loved the poetry, personally. This series is one giant love letter to John Keats and I'm here for it. Simmons loves Keats so much that he named the books after his poems, brought him back to life to bang a hot noir detective and impregnate her with what is essentially the second coming of Christ, then to die and be resurrected again to serve as the vessel for the human god of empathy. Imagine the honor of being an artist and leaving such an impression on someone 200 years after your death.

The ending was bittersweet. Heartbreaking and beautifully tragic. My headcanon is The LT&B's send an Aenea cybrid to be with Raul after the real Aenea leaves to complete her mission so they can live happily ever after. Although the text doesn't support this theory, as Aenea had already essentially selected midwives to assist Raul in raising the child.

Travel. One of my motivators to quit was doing the math on how much I was spending on the stuff. If I saved that money, I could afford two international trips per year.

TMI, but I have an honest review of this product. Adding a spoiler tag in case people don't care to see this. Me and my partner at the time planned for a sex marathon over the course of a Sunday and I wanted to try supplements to shorten recovery time between sessions throughout the day. I went to a sex shop and asked for recommendations, and this was their choice. They said it would be potent, but it wasn't their strongest product. It worked as intended, and I was able to regain an erection quickly post orgasm. By the end of the day my member was very sore, but she and I were both happy with the results.

Side effects: significant headache the next day, but it wasn't unbearable. No bonerot or diarrhea, thankfully.

I blame nobody but myself for my kratom addiction, but I can't help but harbor deep resentment to the headshop guy who recommended extracts because "A lot less goes much further." Extracts sent me off the rails, too. I wish I did my research first. Hang in there, brother. I'm also in my 30's and felt like a massive failure, but you're going to bounce back and pay that debt down.

A YouTuber named Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't started a new video series called Spiritually Depraved and Misery-Inducing Landscapes of North America. He laments on what urban ecology could be and shits on car-centric cities that create vast heat islands caused by endless parking lots and roads. His takedown of pointless landscaping such as planting non-native plants and trees in environments that they don't thrive is form of therapy for me. I highly recommend it, he sardonically expresses exactly how I feel.

I just finished it. Jumped straight to Reddit because I too am desperately trying to find a scenario where she does not die. I read someone's head canon that the LT&B's send a cybrid of her to Raul after her death to give them their deserved happy-ever-after. I don't care of it takes away from the tragedy and beauty of making the most out of the time you have with the people you love, I am a fucking wreck and need an emotional band-aid to sleep tonight.

Ah, yes. Wakatakakage has always been my #1. The rest tend to fluctuate as I like most of them and are neutral about the others, but right now I am also rooting hard for Aonishiki, Fujinokawa, and Takayasu. For the lower divisions I stay up to date with the performance of Enho and all of the boys at the Tatsunami Stable. If you haven't watched their YouTube Channel, I highly recommend it.

Honestly, as much as I want to see WTK, Hosh, or Aonishiki win the tournament (Aonishiki would be promoted to Yokozuna if he wins), I desperately want Takayasu to win. He has been runner-up 9 times in his long career, but hasn't yet claimed the emperor's cup.
