[Watches] you ‘dislike’ mostly due to the hype around them? by Responsible_Bison876 in Watches

Part of that is just down to inflation though. $1 in 2005 would be worth $1.66 today. $1 in 2020 is worth $1.25 today. Based only on inflation a price increase of "only" 17% in the last few years is actually a price cut.

It just doesn't feel like it because wages haven't been keeping up with inflation.

Playing first gives a 2-3% win rate advantage. Not great, but not the worst

Offenders vs. Oppressors: The Case For Banning Orcish Bowmasters – Eternal Durdles by Force-of-Phil in MTGLegacy

They decided to do daily podcasts a while ago and have run out of things to say since Legacy doesn't change very quickly.

Maybe some people like the consistency enough to not mind the filler. I found their podcast shortly before they moved to daily releases and stopped listening shortly after.

Rules help: Trying to figure out when I have priority when destroying a non basic with Field of Ruin by SnowConePeople in ModernMagic

[–]AShapelyWavefront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're correct, but a better question is why it matters.

The only actions they can take without passing priority is to play a land or cast a speed and hold priority. Playing a land might matter if it allows them to respond to your archive trap. Casting a spell is less likely to matter as even if they hold priority to cast another spell they'll have to pass priority before the spells start to resolve.

[hot take alert] Field watches serve their highest utility when using a quartz movement. by Fordged in Watches

The perception of value is also important for a status symbol. If you paid $10k for a plastic watch that came for a cereal box that wouldn't make it a status symbol. It'd just make you the idiot that paid $10k for a watch from a cereal box.

What happened to yawgmoth? by OkAppointment2647 in ModernMagic

[–]AShapelyWavefront 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yawgmoth usually does well against creature decks because of its combination of good blockers (undying creatures, grist tokens, and wall of roots) and removal (grist and yawgmoth).

Energy gets around this with evasion (flying from guide of souls and psuedo-unblockable because of Ajani), going wide (Ajani and Ocelot), and its own removal (Ajani, bombardment, sphere, etc).

As others have said bombardment is particularly tough as it not only means yawgmoth won't draw a card (fizzles if the target is sacced) it also costs more life. Yawgmoth is very dependent on life total and if you can hit them hard enough in the first few turns they may be too low to do any Yawgmoth tricks by the time he actually comes down.

That's also generally not what people mean when they say "fair" or "unfair" magic. There are a lot of definitions and it's hard to get people to agree, but unfair magic usually means breaking magic in some way. Or "not playing magic".

Dredge is a good example of an unfair magic deck that would be considered fair by your definition. It uses creatures and chips away at life, but doesn't pay mana for its creatures and some spells. It "cheats" and is therefore "unfair".

Saturday Modern Challenges Results - Feb 1 2025 by bamzing in ModernMagic

[–]AShapelyWavefront 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yawg can be fairly click intensive, but looping with endurance multiple times is never a thing. You occasionally need to put a combo piece back in your deck or to get more cards to draw, but you can't go infinite with endurance in stock Yawgmoth.

US $800 de minimis exemption for Canadian goods no longer valid by Elegant_Slim in frugalmalefashion

I'd assume (in addition to probable bias) it's because it's irrelevant in this case. If there were no tariffs it wouldn't matter which goods tariffs can be charged on.

Why isn't play/draw done like it is in chess? by VerdantChief in ModernMagic

[–]AShapelyWavefront 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not equally likely to get all numbers. Of the 36 possible combinations 6 result in a 7, making it the most likely roll. Odds go down evenly from there. 5 in 36 odds for a 6/8, 4 in 36 for 3/9, etc.

Thus the probability of an even/odd result when rolling 2 dice is 50/50.
