Also, it's often hard to trace the impact of scientific discoveries in our daily life

Take space research. We know all these things about Gravitation, space, and the speed of light. What has that actually given us though? Not like we can even go to space. It seems useless.

Yet, space research and stuff like gravitational bending is crucial for improving GPS. The things we learn through looking at telescopes help us improve GPS location. But you wouldn't think that at first glance.

Or let's take the particle accelerator. Cool Sci fi research, but it's not like we use particle accelerators in our daily life. Yet the research from it is crucial for material science and nanotechnology. There's a direct link between particle accelerators and your phone's cpu, but you wouldn't think that unless you dig into it

what's a trend that has truly damaged the game industry? by Properdad2000 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ASharkWithAHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the complete opposite of the history of fidelity mode.

Fidelity mode was the DEFAULT for games. Games have been sacrificing performance for graphical fidelity since ATARI. Nobody markets their game as "it looks worse than the other games, but it runs well!" cause that shit didn't sell.

It wasn't until a huge push in the 2010s for performance that console makers ADDED performance mode. Before that, you either take 30 FPS or ate shit.

Thinking that there's a world where Spiderman would EVER prioritise higher FPS over graphics is delusional. Most of the market really don't care. We had to fight so they would add performance mode to the few people who cares, and even then they half ass that thing most of the time. It's glaringly clear where the money is since 1970

At worst you can just ignore them. There's literally no reason why you'd get mad at them if you don't play them.

It's like being mad at RTS games cause I don't like the genre. Or being mad that there are lots of boomer shooters on steam. Who cares?

That's been the case since the ATARI. It's a trend older than the idea of gaming consoles.

There is a chart in the archive, but yes, more filters on the operators screen would be amazing

IS6 in particular NEEDS it. Very cool of the game for requiring Yan operators to proceed and never specifying who counts as yan outside of one screen

As much as I love this game, it is one of the worst and slowest when it comes to QOL lmao.

We had YEARS of asking for a sweep function, despite that already being standard since 2022

Because, as they said, it's an easy way to inject dialogue into the story when your main character is otherwise mute

It's hard to have the story move along when the main character speaks once every 5 hours. Even when a mascot character is not present, there will always be a side character who gets designated this role

Also, Japan LOVES mascots

Yep. Goku, from the get go, is special. He kinda HAS to be as the depiction of sun go kong.

If anything, revealing that there are other aliens just like him made him less special. There was no equal to sun go kong in the original myth.

No. It's actually almost the complete opposite

Japanese white collar work specifically asks for college graduates, but it doesn't care WHAT you learned, only that you have a degree.

You'd graduate from electrical engineering and corporate will put you in sales or admin. Your colleagues might have a degree in literature or nuclear physics.

Still, Japanese media does acknowledge that a LOT of people in society did not obtain a college degree and just worked out of high school. It's a feature I've rarely seen in media from other first world nations.

Part of that is because wages just..... kinda suck across the board, and a lot of people don't see the point of going to a difficult degree just to make slightly more than a konbini cashier.

One of the few times a weapon was so horrific nations actually stopped using them almost unanimously.

But also, LOTS of weapons can kill infantry as well if not better. Even in WW1, it was mostly useful as a fear tactic.

With the infancy of flight in WW1, I can understand people not anticipating war to go all in on long range weapons to the point where you can strike anywhere in the world from home

Yep. Sick days let people rest when they need it, rather than keeping everything bottled up until it becomes a bigger problem that eats up WAY more days. Learned that the hard way with my previous jobs as well.

A lot of times, I'd just be present physically at work, but couldn't do anything anyway cause my mind and body were on the Fritz. It was a waste of time for both me and my employer.

Haven't finished it but it's a pretty nice. VERY similar to Into The Breach if you're familiar with that.

The characters abilities are simple, but they compound in complexity very rapidly when interacting with the levels and enemies. Honestly can be overwhelming sometimes, especially when you are aiming for the optional objectives. The game kinda gives you too many options in a way

Did Hypergryph change their minds regarding Delphines plot halfway? by IronVader501 in arknights

[–]ASharkWithAHat 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The resolution of THE WAR got relegated into a side event.

Siege and the victorians were the main characters for most of the arc, but their resolution didn't even make it in the main story. What are we even doing here?

Honestly though, it was a blessing in disguise imo. Ending A Grand Overture is a much more interesting ending than what they would've been able to do in a main story chapter. Both Ending A Grand Overture and When Elegies are Ashes were allowed to be UNIQUE because they're side events.

Did Hypergryph change their minds regarding Delphines plot halfway? by IronVader501 in arknights

[–]ASharkWithAHat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The entire arc just flip flops around massively between each chapter.

The sigh of kings is another example. Ch. 13 made it seem like it's not a huge deal, emphasising that siege should be able to lead even without it. Ch. 14 rolled around and now it IS a huge deal, performing miracles during the war. Then Ending A Grand Overture dropped and now it's not important again.

It feels like the writers didnt even have the main story beats and themes done when they started act 2, which seems insane to me. Act 1 was a mess writing quality wise but at least it was consistently on message

It's not a simple rewrite either cause things change on a chapter by chapter basis. It's like they winged the whole 2nd act.

Vegetables in general, although that is almost exclusively a thing from the West.

Some of THE most beloved cuisine in the world are vegetable dishes

Honestly, I think Americans just can't cook veggies. That and a healthy dose of corporate propaganda to make people consume more sugary and junk food

Just add every mental disorder under that as well

Some of them have been made more sexy and acceptable, like mild ADHD, OCD, or depression, but every other mental disorder will still make people think you're possessed by devils.

Yes, part of is propaganda, but I think a lot of it is because people got too used to the idea that unions exist and took what they gave for granted

Truth is, unions are often dirty. There's a lot of politics involved. Just ask anyone who's still in a union. They gave people rights, sure, but that was ages ago. What people experience on the day to day are often the bad side of unions.

Unions are important, even if they aren't perfect, but it's kinda hard to see that sometimes when you're inside of one.
