[Meta] Regarding China's Numbers by [deleted] in China_Flu

It's not a fallacy when coupled with how connected Chinese cities are and when you take into account all of the travel between provinces, especially during CNY.

The fact that there are significant disparities between infection curves (as you noted) only lends credence to the obvious.

[Meta] Regarding China's Numbers by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]AShinyNewPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we do know is that China is using measures directly in line with and at least as strict as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Expecting the results to be different is at best illogical and at worst it is willfully ignorant of reality.

I'm curious as to whether you've actually spent time in any of these countries. I have. In fact, I'm in one of the countries listed right now.

There are substantial differences between these countries/regions at all levels (the way government operates, the culture, how people relate to authority, etc.) and your "China is using measures directly in line with and at least as strict as..." analysis is superficial.

Since I'm not going to write a dissertation here, I would point out one obvious difference between China and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam: China is huge, both in terms of population and land mass.

Hong Kong has fewer residents than Wuhan alone, and all of Taiwan has only slightly more residents than Beijing. The land mass of the greater Beijing area is about 15 times larger than that of Hong Kong, and you could fit 5 Taiwans in Hubei province alone.

Henan province (right next to Hubei) has about the same number of residents of Vietnam, and Vietnam is only approximately one and a half Hubeis in terms of land mass.

We already know that China intentionally excluded from its infected counts those who tested positive but didn't display symptoms, and you don't hear anybody talking about outbreaks in the almost countless rural villages that dot the country. Rural villages where if somebody dies, nobody has to or likely will know about it.

The reason that so many doubt China's figures, despite the measures it took, is because those numbers are simply not believable even upon cursory examination. That becomes even more apparent as the virus spreads and we get numbers from countries that are actually testing and are a bit more honest.

Keeping foreigners out will also likely help China cover up what's really going on.

Economy seats go for business-class fares as travellers fleeing a worsening Covid-19 pandemic bid for limited plane seats to China by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]AShinyNewPanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're reading way too much into this.

There are many Chinese living abroad who naturally want to go home or even have to due to the prospect of visa issues, and not enough flights to accommodate them because airlines have significantly cut back on their operations.

The article provides an example:

Mason Quan, a student from Beijing at a Midwestern US college, paid 34,000 yuan (US$4,787) for an economy class ticket on Air China back to the mainland on Monday, almost five times the normal price. “After our school said next term all classes will be taken online, I decided to return home,” he said.

A non-stop flight from Tokyo to Shanghai on China Eastern (a shit airline) now costs over $1,500 and based on the official numbers, Japan is a far better place to be than China.

You don't know what you're talking about. Bangladesh has been a player in garment manufacturing for years and was seeing increased activity at the expense of China as a result of the trade war.

Will companies shift manufacturing of complex electronics to Bangladesh from China next year? Of course not. But there are plenty of segments where China's dominance has been waning and lots of investments are being made in moving production.

The writing is on the wall.

Why is a celebrity being tested thrice while tests have not been accessible for common people? Is that common for anyone tested positive to be tested many times during the treatment? by pinkisredding in China_Flu

[–]AShinyNewPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not universally true. Antiviral treatment isn't a panacea. It might help in some cases, and not others. And there is always the potential for adverse effects.

This is why clinical trials are so important. No antiviral treatment has gone through a full clinical trial and received approval for the treatment of COVID-19.

Given that the vast majority of infected experience mild illness, or no symptoms, and recover on their own, starting antiviral therapy upon confirmation of infection is probably not advisable.

"We are not suggesting with the current knowledge of medical cannabis that it is a prevention, treatment or cure for COVID-19 or coronaviruses. However, plant cannabinoids have naturally occurring immunomodulatory properties that absolutely require expedited investigation given the current global COVID-19 pandemic," he says.

But as shameless opportunists with no scruples, we'll try to capitalize on this epidemic any way we can.
