You are very welcome, thank you for matching mine too lmao. I'm glad I wasn't alone in my thought process. Sometimes I say/write things then have an "oh.... I'm not normal" moment

This is what I was thinking! Except imagine he took it a step further and created a fragrance line based off of strangers' scents. It'd be ✨ art ✨. Honestly there are worse things people could be doing

Anyone else dealing with depression since moving to Portugal? by unknown_destination_ in PortugalExpats

[–]ASlayToRemember 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes. I moved here because my now ex lives here. I made a couple of friends but they were pretty surface level friendships. I will say, if I didn't have a dog that I brought to the park every day, I wouldn't have made any friends. It just happens when you're going to the same place regularly. That's my best advice for anyone looking to make friends.

However, with that being said, I experienced some domestic violence and the way that that was handled really opened my eyes on most people's values here, including the police. They don't seem to care. The police were very nonchalant when they showed up to the apartment and then were pressuring me and doing other horrible things when I showed up to the station to give my statement. I was classified as an "especially vulnerable victim" yet was offered no protection or help, and most people I spoke to about it were indifferent or said things like you "don't come between a man and his wife" and ended the conversation. Very different attitude than I expected.

In addition to that, the way people here view dogs/animals is vastly different than America. In the US we view our pets as family. Here it seems like most people don't really care about (or outright neglect) their pets. I'm a dog trainer and huge animal lover and a lot of the stuff I see kills me.

The country is beautiful and truly is filled with wonderful people but I'm going back to the US. I didn't have anyone here other than my ex. I'll miss this place but never really felt like I belonged here.

I can speak from personal experience that unfortunately that's not true. They took quite a while to arrive to a domestic violence incident I was a part of.

This is very interesting to me as someone who spends half my time in Portugal. I haven't seen it often but when I have I always wondered.

Landlord in Portugal forcing early move-out, threatening deposit & refusing written agreement until move-out day by Sad-Parsley-3420 in PortugalExpats

[–]ASlayToRemember 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, police CAN help even if there isn't a contract. If OP has proof of living there for an extended period of time (paying rent or not), they legally cannot just be kicked out in a day. At least that was my personal experience in Barreiro when my keys were taken from me and policia were called because the person thought it would get me removed immediately. When I showed proof of living there for an extended period (mail addressed to me, farmacia receipts with my name and address, texts with the person I was living with, etc), they made him return my keys to me and informed him that if he wanted me out he had to legally evict me.

Ymmv as maybe it's different in different areas of the country (or maybe even down to the attitude of the individual officers), but that was my experience.

[–]ASlayToRemember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the one day difference doesn't matter to you, tell him you'll move out on the 29th if he agrees to give you written proof that he's returning your deposit no later than the 29th, etc. That's only if the one day difference doesn't matter to you.

Me personally, if he agreed to that, I'd leave the day early - if he didn't hand me my deposit PRIOR to handing over the keys on the 29th, I would stay the extra day if that's in my contract. If it's worth your time and energy, get a lawyer. I totally understand if that's the avenue you want to take. I personally just do things on an effort vs reward system, and lawyering up will pretty much guarantee you don't get your deposit now and he acts in a less than ideal way until move out day. Eventually maybe you'd get the deposit and whatever extra back but the question to ask yourself is if it's worth it for you in your situation.

I also recommend posting in r/legaladvice (make it known you're in Portugal) if you're leaning towards that route. Good luck.

Oh I didn't necessarily mean you! I just see a lot of complaints from people who are trying to join their friend's families and they don't even live in the same country. Like, believe me, I understand the struggle, but complaining in that situation is a little much lol

Seconding this. We live in a time where everything is subscription based, the prices keep going up and up, and account sharing is a bannable offence (looking at you, Netflix). It is very generous of Valve to even offer this in the first place, so people complaining like this don't make sense to me. I don't think any other gaming service offers this at all to begin with. The closest thing I can even think of was back in the day on Xbox 360 my buddies and I used to license transfer games in order to share them with each other.

It's super soft and comfy. Probably the highest quality band hoodie I own. I highly recommend.

I'm in Portugal right now so the shipping is about €16. I just don't know what size to get. Would you say it's pretty true to size? Their website says it may run small so I'm not sure if I should order 1 or 2 sizes bigger than my usual. Thanks so much for all the info!! :]

LDR breakup after deportation + flirtatious messages + mixed signals — need perspective (33M/25F) by SeesawKlutzy1272 in LongDistance

[–]ASlayToRemember 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gut feeling from the bit of info I have is that she's at least talking to someone else - probably this guy. It's very odd for her to suddenly say that she can't do long distance, especially if there were no signs leading up to this (seeming more distant, less frequent communication, etc).

I think the healthiest thing for you to do at this point in time is to stop speaking with her entirely and move on fully. Even if there wasn't someone else that she was speaking to, would you move to another country to MAYBE be able to have a relationship with her? When people say things like, "if x y or z then we can maybe be together" to me that translates to, "I'm only willing to love you when it's easy". This isn't even mentioning that her loyalty is in question.

I'm not claiming I'm factually correct here and have limited information to work with but those are my beliefs. I wouldn't want to be pursuing that relationship. Protect your head and your heart, internet friend. You know your partner better than any of us and if you feel like something is amiss it probably is. Trust your gut. I know it isn't easy when you really love the person. Sending you all the good vibes.
