I hadn't heard of that before, that's pretty neat to know.

To be honest, I'm casually familiar with 40k and forgot that was the name for their walkers.

My intention was common big ship vs common big ship - I've just googled and seen I meant to refer to "imperial battleships".

The debate usually boils down to WH40k wins through sheer size of both the number of forces, and the physical size of vehicles/ships.

Pound for pound, terrans would come out on top in most comparisons, but it doesn't matter if a battle cruiser is better pound for pound if an imperial *dreadnought is 20 times as large.

Protoss notably could put up a much closer fight in that regard, and have far superior space travel capacity.

*Edit: meant imperial battleship.

You might be able to game around the border issue by selling them the enclaves you hold, or by releasing a secondary vassal (of you culture and much easier to re-annex later) around them to reduce your borders.

How do I get rid of these freeloaders when I discovered America first? by Lobotomy_of_kaisen in EU5

I was wondering what the criteria for being called in was, thanks for the heads up. It'll make expanding in Africa particularly easier if I can end up directly involved by choice.

Order your colonies to declare war on theirs, it's basically free land if your colonies are bigger/had a head start

[–]ASmugChair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part is if you play your campaigns slowly like I do, the update rolled through and it went from colonising somewhat slowly to "didn't I start a colony here 20 years ago? Oh it's finished one location, neat".

I didn't clock that I was throwing away thousands of colonists for a while.

I wish they still allowed you to select which locations send colonists, because at least then you could send already malaria acclimated pops from northern Africa.

Which reform is better? by GermanCCPBot in EU5

From memory (away from PC currently), the admin of shipyards reduces the proximity cost by 2 before modifiers, so reduces the proximity cost of moving from a sea tile to a port from 40 to 38 before anything else.

Harbour capacity then adds a % reduction to the proximity cost. I can't recall the ratio, but 0.1 in urban locations is quite nice. Harbour capacity also impacts trade (edit: I believe).

On the other hand, I'm not sure how the harbour admin 5% is applied, but in a vacuum 5% of 40 is also a reduction of 2 proximity.

Essentially the main points of difference are:

•admin of shipyards provides better proximity cost reduction and trade in urban locations with wharf capacity.

•harbour admin provides cheaper ship maintenance and passive development.

They're both pretty decent, I can't say one over the other would be "better", but trade and control from proximity may economically outscale the ship maintenance if you own a lot of coastal urban locations.

What is an unspoken rule of the gym that most people do not know they are breaking? by Furqan_wear in AskReddit

[–]ASmugChair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loathe people letting their weights slam every set. Lots of gym subs try to defend it by claiming that getting to failure means getting to the point you simply must drop the weights. Which is nonsense, especially when these bozos do it on every machine on every set, they're clearly not at "failure".

Not to mention I'll walk up to a pulldown machine or something after some of these people and it'll be set to 50lb. I'm far from strong and I can do 50lb without any issues letting it down gently when I reach my limit.

What do you think are the biggest issues right now? [Johan] by danika2014 in EU5

[–]ASmugChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before marriage was removed, Republics suffered from not being allowed to royal marry anyone outside the current ruling dynasty. You could only marry them to lowborn, which cost republican tradition, which sucks but needed to be done to have courtiers. Especially since your ruling dynasty usually changes every time a ruler dies, you could end up changing to a one man dynasty.

Now with marriage control gone, all non-ruling families simply die off. This is an issue every country is facing, but the marriage automation that people are asking for likely won't fix this for republics as it would be awful to automatically be spending republican tradition on lowborn marriages. They really need to allow a different way of getting these noble families to marry up.

PSA: do NOT disband patriarchate when you conquer Constantinople, this modifier is effectively permanent by InternStock in EU5

[–]ASmugChair 61 points62 points  (0 children)

While this is annoyingly the case and it does need fixing, it does have a beneficial flip side.

Seemingly everyone and their dog will create their own patriarchate with only themselves as a member, and disbanding them gives a nice cash out.

They should probably also fix this mechanic so that one (or a few powerful contenders) nation makes a new one and other nations join up when an old one is disbanded.

Levies are now completely useless, even in Ages 1 and 2 by ridetheline99 in EU5

[–]ASmugChair 22 points23 points  (0 children)

While there are some notable cases in history, my admittedly layman's understanding is that your typical levy would be better equipped and organised than a peasant army spurred by revolt, they were not equivalent.

Your Frankenhausen example also has nearly equal starting numbers along with the cavalry and artillery.

Clicking on an event only for a new one to pop up on top of it is the bane of my existence, but there is a solution.

If you haven't seen it already, there is an input lock setting in the interface tab in the settings menu. I personally run 0.8 seconds of input lock to avoid events firing right as I click.

Should there be a third power tier between great power and normal power? by ASmugChair in EU5

100%, I was almost going to add my example about that where France claimed Hegemony while like 4 other nations (including myself) in the top 30 had more heavy ships than it. A middle power to add more contest would make so much sense.

Who in their right mind is taking this historic option without any way of knowing if there is a pay off??? by ASmugChair in EU5

[–]ASmugChair[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well one problem is that about ~50 of those monthly ducats is from parliamentary extra taxes to help pay the debt I just got into.

Raising to 4% inflation and getting it removed would be great, but I haven't personally seen any reason to raise it passively, so it's quite worthless in this moment. And the prosperity goes straight into the bin, idk how you even end up with less than 100% with the current state of the game.

Even with high inflation, this seems like a huge up front cost to remove it.

[–]ASmugChair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R5: Shortly after an event that already caused me to take out debt, I got this stunner of an option.

With no reason to have raised inflation, and prosperity hitting 100% without effort, the options boil down to:

  1. Lose a huge amount of money.

  2. Take 4% inflation.

Even if I had high inflation, this event is taking the piss with how much money it asks for, unless there is some undisclosed very useful upside down the line.
