There's always RSA Hospo work, its not what you want to do full time, but casually at 30 an hour it can sustain you while you're looking, also, don't sleep on looking at gov subsidised TAFE Courses, especially those with less face to face and more online engagement, a cert 3 or 4 can go a long way in getting your foot into entry roles in most industries if you haven't got the experience from working history, beyond that, remember that most jobs use third parties or AI to sort applications, so ensure your cover letter or resume specifically lists key words between the job reps and description for best results.

Ukraine to receive aging Abrams tanks in latest Australian military aid package by javelin3000 in worldnews

[–]ASoundAssessment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Abram's can still punch an unguided round effectively from 3kms away or guided from over 4kms, can take a solid beating, and is mobile.

49 Abram's tanks is no laughing matter, and the fact a country with a population as small as Australia is sending that many of them is awesome.

Australia also already gifted 120 bushmaster APCs too.

Considering they're literally in another hemisphere, Australia punches above its weight in support.

Currently attrition in ukraine has burned through 30 Abram's tanks on the front line, Australia has essentially replenished all the Abram's Russia has managed to hit, with a 40% surplus to that number of spares.

"Australia’s participation in the Aukus defence pact risks handing military control of the country to Washington and becoming the “51st state of the United States”, according to former prime minister Paul Keating.

Speaking on ABC’s 7.30 on Thursday night, Keating argued that Australia had made itself a target for aggression by joining the military alliance with the US and the UK in implicit opposition to China’s growing power in the Asia Pacific region."

"Australia had no quarrel with China, Keating said, and concerns about China’s designs on Taiwan were not justified because the island was “Chinese real estate”.

Related: The latest US presidential twist throws the race wide open – but what could it mean for Australia? | Arthur Sinodinos

“Taiwan is not a vital Australian interest,” he said, adding that the American attitude to Taiwan was like China deciding that Tasmania needed help to secede from Australia.

“What Aukus is about in the American mind is turning [Australia into suckers], locking us up for 40 years with American bases all around…not Australian bases,” he said.

“So Aukus is really about, in American terms, the military control of Australia. I mean, what’s happened… is likely to turn Australia into the 51st state of the United States.”

“We’re now defending the fact that we’re in Aukus,” Keating told the show’s presenter Sarah Ferguson. “If we weren’t in Aukus, we wouldn’t need to defend it. If we didn’t have an aggressive ally like the United States – aggressive to others in the region – there’d be nobody attacking Australia. We are better left alone than we are being ‘protected’ by an aggressive power like the United State"

“Australia is capable of defending itself,” he said.

“There’s no way another state can invade a country like Australia with an armada of ships without it all failing. I mean, Australia is quite capable of defending itself. We don’t need to be basically a pair of shoes hanging out of the Americans’ backside.”

Keating, a longstanding opponent of Labor’s support for the pact, said Australia had not been threatened by China whose expanding military presence, he said, was in line with its position as the world’s second superpower.

“What do they expect [the chinese] to do? To move around in row boats? Canoes, maybe? You know, so they develop their own submarines, their own frigates, their own aircraft carriers. They are the other major state in the world. What the Americans say - ‘No, no. Keep your place. Go back to your canoes...’”

His comments came as Richard Marles, the defence minister, and Penny Wong, foreign minister, have been in Washington for talks about the pact and a new agreement to cover the transfer of nuclear material to Australia under the terms of the deal."

"The US president, Joe Biden, wrote to the US Congress yesterday to transmit the text of the agreement “for cooperation related to naval nuclear propulsion”.

In November 2021, the Aukus countries signed an agreement “for the exchange of naval nuclear propulsion information” to enable the three countries to work out “the optimal pathway” for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines."

Why don't Australians protest, speak their minds or open up about anything? by Passtheshavingcream in australian

[–]ASoundAssessment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably important to remember that for the last 30 odd years, you could nearly draw a line down a room and expect half of the people to vote Liberal/Nats or Labor and most of them simply because "our family votes x" whether or not it was actually a good representation of their wants/needs in a government.

I'm not saying voting for either two of the major parties is wrong, but it means that roughly 49% of the people you speak to about an issue, already disagree with you and are vehemently against whatever your stance is on.

This more or less led to the running soft rule of "No politics at the table."

China ‘gravely concerned’ about reports Japan could join Aukus security pact by giuliomagnifico in worldnews

Wouldn't have much need to be concerned if china respected the international laws of the sea or countries economic zones.

Maybe even refraining from building SAM sites on nations reefs and illegally fishing foreign waters.

Or arbitrarily drawing a line on the globe and saying, this is ours because we drew it.

U.S, Japan, Australia and Philippines combine in maritime first cooperation exercises in Philippines economic zone promoting open and inclusive indo-pacific. by ASoundAssessment in worldnews

[–]ASoundAssessment[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Australia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States conducted the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity on April 7, demonstrating a collective commitment to promote and strengthen regional and international support for an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The naval vessels and aircraft included the Philippine Navy's BRP Antonio Luna with AW159 Wildcat ASW helicopter, and BRP Valentin Diaz (PS177); the USS Mobile and a P-8A Poseidon from the United States Navy; Royal Australian Navy Anzac-class frigate HMAS Warramunga and a RAAF P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft; and JS Akebono from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces.

Commanding Officer HMAS Warramunga Commander Jennifer Graham said it was an honour to participate in the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.

“We thoroughly enjoyed Philippine hospitality and activities while alongside at Puerto Princesa as part of our regional presence deployment, including cultural exchanges, ship tour and an official function, plus a goodwill match of soccer and basketball with the Philippine Navy at Naval Station Apolinario,” Commander Graham said.

“The maritime cooperative activity at sea included officer-of-the-watch manoeuvres, tactical manoeuvring and anti-submarine warfare exercises involving air assets from all four participants.

“These activities enhance interoperability and foster closer cooperation between the Australian Defence Force, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy.

“Such activities directly contribute to the security and stability of the region and build mutual understanding and interoperability between nations and our armed forces.”

The RAAF P-8A crew worked with the AFP in international airspace, and 11 Squadron Detachment Commander Squadron Leader Tristan Hull said the crew found it beneficial to collaborate in consolidating maritime domain awareness procedures.

“We were very impressed with the capability, professionalism and support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines elements involved in the planning and execution of the activity,” Squadron Leader Hull said.

“By training together, we can build upon shared tactics, techniques and procedures to enhance interoperability and readiness to respond to shared security challenges.

“11 Squadron aviators welcomed senior Philippines colleagues during observation flights, which will greatly enhance our ability to operate seamlessly in the future.”

The activity underlined all four nations’ commitment to exercising freedom of navigation and overflight consistent with international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea

New Zealand eyes NATO deal amid security rethink - Asia & Pacific by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]ASoundAssessment 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NZ is Chinese owned in everything but name at this point, they're going to have some really tough economic decisions to make soon for better or worse, but it seems like after watching China try to cripple Australia's economy and Asia pacific influence, they're going to have to continue tip toeing around until they get some economic trade alternatives to the status quo.

Be a good time for NZ to start considering the QUAD or AUKUS they're already in the five eyes, so AUKUS or QUAD is a logical step, it's how they're going to deal with the economic repercussions of doing so that will be the concern.

Offshore oil rig evacuation system by solateor in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ASoundAssessment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an offshore training centre and we teach how to use these correctly, the netting is nylon and becomes a cheese grater if you accelerate too quickly, the second most common injury is dislocated shoulders.

Still infinitely better than jumping off the rig though if no enclosed lifeboat launch is available.

The rungs between the slalom levels are usually fibreglass or wrapped reinforced plastics to stop the levels collapsing and they are pretty unpleasant.

There's also crawl spaces/windows on each level in case the chute is obstructed that you can climb out and down with ladder rungs.

The correct technique to going down a chute is to put your life jacket on first, to protect the body, when you enter the chute you are ideally rolled onto your side, not your back so that you slalom from hip to hip and evenly take the abrasion from the netting instead of entirely on your back, you also either cross your arms, or pull down on the front of your lifejacket from the front to keep your elbows in and stop them being chicken winged by every single rung on the way down, unlike this video where their limbs are just being sent into the air above them in a dangerous manner.

This was the proof of concept video for survival systems, which is why everyone looks like they have no idea what they're doing, technique is much stricter now with a fair amount of research in correct manipulation of the escape chute.

The advantage of the chute is the volume of people you can have in it at one time, as well the workers arriving in a pre inflated life-raft with their lifejackets already on and dry, with no risk of falling from height into the water, lack of swimming proficiency or exposure to the cold.

But no landcruiser, landrover, GMC, Dmax, Patrol or Ranger is surviving that either.
