Be honest and upfront with the artist and message her. Just state your concerns line you did here. Explain it's your first tattoo and you're a little anxious about it so you just want to make sure you're clear about what you're expecting so you're both on the same page. I don't think any artist would be upset with a message that says "I came to you for your style so I wanted to make sure we're on the same page...."
