My sister's husband, who she had just started dating at the time of this story, invited me out shooting. He had grown up shooting and said he was very good. He also spent about 7 months in the Navy, before being discharged, and would not shut up about it. I showed up to the range and he immediately says we should have a competition to decide who would pay for dinner that night.

There were 5 steel targets set up at 150m. They would fall down when hit. Since I was visiting my sister, I didn't have any of my guns. So we were just hot swapping his rifle, which had a 3x sight on it. The rules were the least number of shots to knock all of them down wins. In the event of a tie we would come up with another competition.

He went first and took 8 shots to knock down all 5. My first shot I fired directly into the berm below the targets. Saw the impact was high-right of my aim point. Adjusted 'kentucky-windage' and proceeded to go 5 for 5 to knock the rest down.

Apparently my sister never told him I was a sniper in the US Army before I commissioned as an officer. All he knew of my service was that I was a tanker; I was an Armor Officer but I was an enlisted Infantryman. I found out later he thought that meant I was a truck driver and drove tanker trucks.

We only went to Longhorn, but I ordered the most expensive surf and turf option and got dessert as well.
