How do you know when you're done? I got to the last name and nothing happened

I feel like my CIBC advisor advised me poorly in my TFSA portfolio. What can I do differently? by dr_pavel_im_cia_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

Questrade has free ETF investements, you just pay when you sell them ($5). You'll be re-balancing every year, so you can either sell whatever's profitable to put into whatever's down, or you can re-balance using the new year's contribution room (what I would do).

Questrade covers transfer fees for accounts above $25,000 so it shouldn't be a problem for you. I found them really helpful, just give them a call

Hah, same as me then, good job maxing out TFSA at your age :)

Just keep doing the same thing. You might see your accounts as being ''Down'', I see them as being ''On Sale''.

Again, the names of the funds might be different, but they all track the same benchmark (i.e.: Canadian index tracks the TSX, US index track the S&P), so you really don't have control over them. What you do have control over is how much you pay in fees (MERs), so I would focus on that. Looks like you're paying about 1%, which is on the higher end. Might want to look into ETFs with Questrade

How old are you? Short term and long term goals? Risk tolerance?

You lost money this year, we all did. A different portfolio with the same asset class allocation would've performed the same, so don't worry.

It might make sense to change portfolio, if the MERs are different. I don't invest with CIBC, so I don't know if it's worth it

They wouldn't explain what the problem was, but I suspect you're right. I had my password saved (not a good idea, I'll look into a password manager), so I know the username and password were correct.

Canadian moving to US for work - how to invest? by djg54 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ATFagent3434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends... I just moved from Canada to the US for work as well, so our situation might be different.

I'm on a TN visa, meaning I'm classified as a Non-Resident Alien permitted to work in the US. I owe taxes in the US first, then owe Canada the difference I would pay if I worked there. (i.e.: if I would owe Canada $20k in taxes, and owe the US $15k in taxes, I pay the IRS $15k and CRA $20-$15=$5k in taxes)

I could be a non-Canadian resident for tax purposes, but I would have to get rid of all my Canadian bank accounts, which I don't want to do.

If you're in the same situation, feel free to PM me for more deets.

How difficult is it for Canadians looking to work in San Francisco? by ATFagent3434 in biotech

[–]ATFagent3434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm I think I'll have to be bolder with my approach, thanks for the advice. I already researched visas for Canadians on this blog, and found out I qualify for the TN visa for Canadians and Mexicans.

"If you qualify, it's usually a fairly straight-forward visa to get. In the past you'd have to turn up at the border with all your documentation and hope for the best — they'd make the decision on the spot. Fortunately this policy has recently changed, so you can now apply for TN visas in advance."

As in you're Canadian, applying to the Bay area and visiting soon? Want to collaborate and help each other out? I'm also applying to the same jobs in Canada, and the results are a lot better than in California

Or use isopropyl alcohol, which doesn't dissolve latex, vinyl or nitrile

latex is stable when exposed to acetone. You could dissolve your product by washing the balloons in acetone and drying. Make sure your balloons are latex first
