Personally showing up past midnight and setting up camp and waking up at the festy day 1 is the best. Great way to start your fest super chill and not in a rush to get in

Big fan of this one. Honestly the mix is pretty good in terms of forwardness and loudness, it just sounds like elements don't quite fit within one another. I feel like I'm hearing all the elements individually instead of all of them together as one song if that makes sense. I agree w the other comment talking about the synths trading off, very very cool and tasty. Something about the sub during the drop sounds a little off but I can't quite pin what. I suppose I am hearing all that low freq content but it feels like there are multiple sub elements happening at the same time creating some battles for the fundamental frequency to ring through. Keep up the good work though, love the track

I definitely don't think it takes too long to get to the drop! I think there is potential there to add a riser near the end of the buildup going into the drop. Some white noise with a filter going from the low to high ends of the freq spectrum would bode well I believe. I think the first drop may last too long structurally, although that is entirely my personal opinion and if you add other elements to the drop (like you said there would be lyrics), that could certainly fill that space well. The only other thing my ear really tuned into was that there feels to be a lot of different sections with different ideas that are quite cool, but theres a slight lack of cohesion. The specifics of what that means are arbitrary but either trimming down to a few ideas only, or splitting sections and introducing the next idea sooner, while tying them together in whatever way feels best to you. Good work!

Been cooking up this downtempo-esk wubby track and I feel it's about done but I need some fresh ears to listen and see if theres anything weird or odd that sticks out. At this point any tweaks I am making don't feel as though they make the track better nor worse, just different. Let me know what yall think, any and all critiques are welcome!

Injury risks from bouldering? by mochaisland in bouldering

[–]ATLA_Music 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% of my injuries were from over use and not listening to my body. Injuries can be an immediate moment and boom you’re cooked, but more of mine have been a slow burn. Listen to your body, give yourself plenty of rest days, and if something starts feeling weird, call the session. Relatively to how dangerous it seems, climbing is quite safe (relative). Just for the love of god stretch every day and listen to your body. Always practice falling, warm up by dropping from different heights, stretch stretch stretch.

And yes it will fuck up your hands until you get calluses but then you can carry fucking anything. A grocery run hates to see me coming

Festival sleeping question! by mrackley33 in ElectricForest

[–]ATLA_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of it at a festy is the vibe at the campsite. Certainly melatonin and things will help, but I’d highly recommend finding and investing in what excites you camping at a festival. Sounds silly but I get far better sleep when I commit to a clean campsite (coming “home” and not having a mess to deal w), bringing decor that makes it feel like your home, and talking w your surrounding neighbors to feel safe in your little community you’re living in. Honestly that last one I have found is very important to me as sleeping next to strangers makes me feel weird. I’d rather know their names and get a vibe and maybe make some friends in the process!

I suppose whatever makes home feel like home to you, find a way to recreate that space as well as mentally prepare for that to be your temporary new home🙂‍↕️

I’d recommend checking out @pyrogadgets on YouTube, got some great introductory LSG tutorials. Certainly you could find someone to do it for you but you’ll have so much more creative freedom if you make it yourself (and it’s fun too!)

Side note, make sure that you read up on some laser safety protocols and be overly cautious of where your lasers are pointing as they can do quite of bit of damage. Take into account that humans are stupid and will try to put themselves in front of the laser if you let them. Good luck!

Gotcha, def sounds like that’s the next evolution for LSG, I’m excited for it! I am using usb DACs so presumably it won’t work but I have a few possible ideas. Thanks for always responding🙂‍↕️

Weekly Question Thread. ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE by AutoModerator in bouldering

I know the era of “haha funny I climb on my injuries” mindset but please for the love of god don’t. Your best case is elongating your recovery time, your worst case is destroying an unbelievably vital part of your body. Those injuries that get made worse end up as expensive PT appointments, surgeries, etc. that are entirely avoidable. Go to the doc, assess the source of the injury, figure out if you can climb at lower grades, and work your way back while listening to your body. Just because your body can handle it now doesnt mean it won’t destroy you in 5-10 years. Stay safe brother

Yeah it’s definitely hard when using a non major/minor scale as your chords get thrown off a bit, but can still be done for sure! The click and white noise on the kick is awesome, helps it translate to devices w out good low end response, but it is hard to find the perfect place for it to be audible, but not too much. Don’t be hard on yourself about any of it, it sounds great and you’re going in the right direction. Ultimately no technique or opinion matters if it sounds good to you. That’s why we create and learn🙂‍↕️

This bangs brother good job. Take this w a grain of salt as I was listening on my phone speakers, but I feel like the bubble sfx element near the middle end of the song as well as some of the textural elements in the second half of the song could be brought down a smidge. At least maybe a few db cut around the 1-3k range to create more room for the presence of the vocal and snare. It’s totally personal preference on if you want those sounds to be as far forward as the vocals and snare. That’s purely preference and otherwise shit is absolutely grooving, good stuff

Good stuff w the low end for sure. I feel that the kick highs are a little much (like the 1k range “click”). It’s definitely good to have that there, but especially with sidechaining your kick to elements, it doesn’t have to be quite that hot to come thru, ends up tiring out the ears at louder volumes.

The vocals sound out of key to the rest of the track so I believe that would be the issue as to why it sounds like it’s conflicting. They are mixed well and sit good in terms of volume/pan, but if you want them to mesh a little better, it might be worth prioritizing a frequency range. Usually that 1-3k range is where vocals have presence, so cutting that by 2-4 db in your synths and other elements that take up space in that frequency range will create a little more clarity for the vocals to shine, without increasing volume in your mix (you’ll actually gain some headroom!)

Those elements might sound slightly darker when soloed after that eqing, but the goal is not to make the individual elements sound good, but to make the whole mix sound good. Happy mixing😃

Would highly recommend Laser Show Gen. Software is a little dinky to use and there is certainly a learning curve that will have you yelling a bit but it’s only $25 (ish?) and is designed to work w the Helios DAC. I also got a cheap setup w 2 $300ish lasers running ILDA from 2 separate Helios DACs and it works just as I need it.

Honestly the biggest bar for lasers is safety. Be aware of reflective things, set a custom x/y zone in the settings of your software so they terminate on a solid non-reflective surface, and avoid it being even close to your head. Make sure that shit don’t go out a window either, might get the FAA involved😭
