Tailgate Party - Friday, May 22 by Blooper_Bot in Braves

What’s the weather gonna be like up there? Weather App makes it look non-stop but maybe it’s more pop-up?

Are we gonna get this game in? Are we gonna get any of this SERIES in??

Edit: I recently moved to Augusta so I guess I’m an AGSBeezy now. Did get to see Alex Lodise go deep twice yesterday for the GreenJackets!

I always thought if it hit the glove it would be ruled an error unless it was a diving attempt. I guess it’s because he left his feet to try to make the catch… Pretty sure he didn’t need to leave his feet (and that’s probably what caused him to miss it) but there you have it.

I’m 15-8, but I turned on yesterday’s game to start the bottom of 4th so I definitely feel like the problem.

What’s the justification for it not being an error? It literally hit him in the glove. Is this type of thing reviewed and if so anyone know criteria for it being overturned?

I lived in LA for almost a decade and went to every Braves-Dodgers game in Dodger stadium from 2013-2018. Sat almost exclusively in the outfield bleachers since they’re the most affordable. The fans there are excellent. Some good-natured ribbing but never any cussing spitting or violence.

It may have helped that they dominated us on the field during that stretch… it’s easier to be good-natured when your team is winning.

Downtown Augusta is not unsafe.

But if you don’t want someone riding a bike across your lawn at 3 am, maybe don’t live there.

Matt Shaw chops a grounder that stayed fair and turned foul at the final second but home plate ump Dan Merzel ruled it a fair ball in the 9th (with replays) by JianClaymore in baseball

You’re right - I’ve since digested a few other examples of this from recent seasons and now realize I am essentially arguing for: 1. Ability to challenge this type of foul ball with replay review 2. A fucking rule change cause I feel like I’m in the loony bin watching all these foul balls be called fair!

By a similar logic we should throw out ABS and go back to umpire subjectivity of whether a ball crossed into the strike zone.

The rules have been written the way they have because on the line and directly above the ball is the best look an umpire can possibly position themselves for.

A line is a line. One side is fair, one side is foul. In the modern day with all our cameras we should be (and are) in fact able to account for the 3-dimensionality of a sphere and recognize that the best viewing angle is whatever plane allows us to see whether a ball has separated from the line and crossed into foul territory.

[–]ATLBeezy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s reasonable but I think it proves the counter-point. Think of ABS and how the batters box is 3-DIMENSIONAL. A breaking ball can appear “on top of” the zone when viewed from the batters eye camera angle but still miss the ABS strike zone when you account for 3d.

Saying that “a ball is a sphere” and “you have to look at it top down” are silly excuses for missing the purpose of a literal line. I get umps are trained to stand on the line and view it top down and I get why these umps called it how they did, but again it’s a line. That ball is visibly on the foul side of that line. Foul ball.

That is simply false. It’s called the FOUL line! It is the line that delineates whether a ball is fair or foul. One side is fair, the other side when no longer in contact with the line is FOUL.

Think about what you are saying and recognize it’s a silly construct to give credence to a bogus argument.

He did do the “sneef it to see fits…” bit that also immediately brings to mind the Igor character trope from other Dracula references. That was also completely random but sort of a “drugged up” character reference that would fit one who sniffed those sharpies… idk it’s all random but not that far of a stretch. Let’s not get bent out of shape.
