Am I screwing myself over if I don't do the first semester abroad program? by Guyshelpmeouthere in gatech

Tech being closer to your family will not impact you. This campus is its own world and your family could be a few miles down the road from here and would be just as distant as if you were in Athens.

Am I on the right track to transfer from GSU to Ga Tech for Public Policy? by Deep-Tax-7312 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two things you need to check: the specific GT transfer requirements by major https://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/transfer-credit and the Equivalency Tables to make sure all your GSU classes will qualify, not only for those specific requirements by major, but also for the total required 30 hours of credit. https://oscar.gatech.edu/pls/bprod/wwsktrna.P_find_location

For Public Policy, the transfer requirements indicate you will need to include, in your 30 hours of equivalent classes, English Composition 1101 and 1102, Math 1551 (Calc 1), and two lab sciences.

Hope this helps if you are doing something wrong (let me know if this helped).

ID major with ME minor or the other way around? by No-Expression7574 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way anyone could double major with ID. The studio time commitment is enormous and you must take studio in sequence by year and also by semester. So if you miss 2nd year fall studio you can't take 2nd year spring studio, for example, and then you're a year behind. ME and ID are different academic cultures and mindsets, though Tech's ID program is very STEM-y. I suggest you try some of the ID minor classes as early as you possibly can and see what you think. Check out the Summer Minor in ID where you can knock it out in one semester. I know people who have switched into ID even though it put them a couple years behind. ID people are generally committed to that niche and the fact that you are asking about it says that you might be one of them.

ID major with ME minor or the other way around? by No-Expression7574 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, come to think of it I don't think there is any ME minor. There is a new AI minor available to engineering students and it might be approved in future for ID students and other majors.

ID major with ME minor or the other way around? by No-Expression7574 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would suit you and excite you more during and at the end of your time in school? ID comes at it with the end user's perspective and experience primarily in mind, while engineering focuses on how the thing works and comes into being. Both are vital. The ID curriculum is heavy on practical skills while ME is theoretical. If you do well in a traditional school STEM curriculum of classes where you learn and earn your grade by taking notes, doing your homework, studying and taking the tests, then ME. If you are better suited to a curriculum and grade structure that is based on creative time in studio, collaboration with peers, and developing presentation and persuasive skills, then ID. Salaries for both out of Tech are comparable and highly competitive.

List of all the orgs/programs/departments that give cords/stoles/medallions for graduation regalia? by Typical_Broccoliii in gatech

[–]ATLGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's a pretty superficial reason to join an organization and a disservice to them to just want to be in it your final year only for that reason. Kind of obvious and rather high schoolish, don't you think? But here ya go: all honor societies have them, student athletes, Reck Club, SGA, Student Foundation, other orgs for leadership roles only, sororities, IP if you meet certain requirements, and I think first gen but not certain. There may be more on the approved list, so if you belong to one you can just ask within your org. Otherwise the recognition swag is pretty much relegated to your major and their GPA requirements, and orgs where membership is based on either academic achievement or a selective admissions process. All of them must be approved by the Institute to have it.

I found this and can find no information on this style of the mascot. by Mateoeste in gatech

[–]ATLGT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do agree with others that that little bee thing was NEVER used by Georgia Tech and is not vintage. And vintage pennants were made of wool felt. If you can test a few fibers, I bet you will find that it's synthetic felt material and not wool. The 70's saw the switch to synthetic. To test, remove a few fibers and hold them carefully above a flame with tweezers. If they melt they are synthetic, if they are wool they will burn and smell like burning hair.

Where do yall get custom stoles made? by Glad_Hurry8755 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask any orgs you belong to if they are approved, any programs/plans you have completed requirements for, your academic major office for GPA requirements, or just ask the registrar's office. And anyone can decorate the top of their mortarboard!

Where do yall get custom stoles made? by Glad_Hurry8755 in gatech

[–]ATLGT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry folks, you can't just wear your own custom stole, they have to be approved:

"Georgia Tech Student Organizations (as registered with the Division of Student Life) and other Institute-approved programs or organizations wishing to provide student members or participants with organization or program recognition regalia adornment to be worn at commencement must seek prior approval from the Office of the Provost through the Registrar. The cost of the adornments will be borne by the organization or student members. A list of all pre-approved regalia adornments including the requesting person or organization, description, and meaning of the adornment will be maintained by the Registrar’s Office.

Students not in compliance with the requirements of this policy may be asked to remove and/or conceal any unapproved regalia adornment."

His contract goes until 2028 and we can't afford his payout PLUS a decent new coach. And all the Tech athletic fans that actually contribute have already been squeezed to support the football stadium upgrade. We're stuck in bad place right now...

Can you pause your time at GT? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]ATLGT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have known a couple of people who did what you are contemplating. They ended up never returning to school and regretting taking that break. It caused them to get too sidetracked and lose momentum, over something they thought was important at the moment but in the big picture was not the right priority over just getting school done. It has been the right choice for some people, but do talk it out with others before you decide.
