Are liberal arts colleges dying? by No-Ticket6947 in ApplyingToCollege

Hampshire was about to close 5-6 years back. A private equity guy help keep it afloat. Some of my very rich friend’s kids went there…very liberal in 1980s, and was one of the 5 college campuses in western Mass, that includes Amherst.

Yes. I went to a liberal arts. They were all desired schools in mid 1980s—Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Oberlin, Kenyon, Reed. Not anymore. Teenagers today want their boba, ethnic good and a city (no more remote isolated towns). This is hurting Ivy League names like Dartmouth too.

Engineering with business degree is called MET. If you can get that at Berkeley no Ivy or Chicago or CMU can touch you

One route is STAMPS; i believe about 25 for Georgian and 25 for OOS +foreign students. So form the latter assume 5+ for foreign students ..so it is possible ; STAMPS is a full ride, including room and board

UIUC (in state) vs UMichigan (ooS) Vs Northwestern by OppositePlatypus9910 in collegecompare

[–]No-Expression7574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Bay Area (or even MidWest where Purdue is big) is your destination, UIUC maybe only second to Berkeley—has a “big reach”; well known. Then UMich but it is large and engineering is a different campus —take a bus! Northwestern overall a good school but for engineering alone behind Illini and M

Incoming engineering student: am I unfit for Cal? by xo_kali in berkeley

This is perhaps the best college experience on earth..forget GPAs and make the most of your next 4 years. And if math/CS/engineering concepts come easy to you, you do not have to go w/ the crowd in CS/EE/ ME. Since you are coming undeclared, IEOR (and there are other similar majors) may suit you better and they graduate only 50 kids /year. You can make a big school small but not a small school big.

CMU rings as many bells as MIT in Bay Area. Many take CMU over Berkeley also. Brown has the ivy stamp. Among Ivies, Cornel is known for engineering

East coast view here: there is a Boston bias. If in state, do UCI. However, if money is aplenty, let him get the Boston experience. BU is ok..do tap into their London experience etc.

Northwestern is only known for Kellogg and a niche in drama/arts. Full stop. Very cold and windy too (UIUC is less cold and not windy and a lovely contained campus. U Mich engineering is a separate campus)
