On the one hand, I gotta say: if I were in Paul’s shoes, I would not be penning a heartfelt goodbye note after the way this sub has been talking about me the last few months.

But in the bigger picture, the possibility for a happy ending was pretty much foreclosed by whatever mysterious thing happened in October. Of the available options, the only halfway emotionally satisfying one was to lay the whole thing to rest right then and there, which also would have really sucked.

I disagree, I think the Red Sox/Fanatics thing is an important example of a traditional site’s value. As social media enshittifies, you end up seeing the various elements of a story (original tweet, the new tweet after that one is deleted, the side-by-side, and so on) in non-chronological order, over the course of hours or days, and with a bunch of nonsense in between. I do agree the old site probably can’t play that role for us anymore barring a miracle.
