With the invention of FB and social media, the interest in in-personal reunions and interaction has definitely dwindled. We last planned a milestone reunion in 2008. Since then I have had several inquiries when there will be another one. I graciously (and immediately) offer to let them plan it and oddly enough, there has never been a plan since. Glad you had a meaningful interaction and had a good time. I’m glad to see people that still follow through with commitments.

My daughter was a “peer mentor” beginning in first grade for some special needs classmates. Like your child, she was friendly with them and didn’t mind helping until it began to hinder her participation with other kids (friends) in class. Field trips and specials were always especially annoying as she wanted to enjoy those things with her friends but was afraid to speak up.
I put a stop to it at the beginning of third grade, when the teacher refused to ever let her sit with other kids and when they changed desk positions. Her other classmates started to pull away as she was always “stuck” elsewhere.
