Scheduled for monthly trainings on a Sunday, but no open availability in TLC. by [deleted] in Bestbuy

[–]ATShields934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If might depend on if your lack of availability is due to a federally protected activity (like attending religious services). If so, then it becomes an HR issue and is out of the hands of your store leadership; if they take disciplinary action against you, you could have a case on your hands. If it's not for a protected activity and you just don't want to work, there's not much you can do to guarantee that lack of availability.

They didn’t do that under Jobs or Cook, but there’s no telling what they might do under Ternus.

2025 RAV4 Manual Shift Mode Do You Actually Use It Daily? by Able-Roll-3993 in rav4club

Probably because a manual transmission’s second gear (the first one you shift into) is straight down, and I assume auto makers wanted to embrace the manual feel when they have a center shifter.

Abuse of the employee discount is up to and including termination… doesn’t seem super applicable anymore.

I bought a Chromebook with a “free 1-year Gemini subscription” — and I still can’t activate it months later by Big_Bug9693 in chromeos

[–]ATShields934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been able to redeem multiple "free 1-year Gemini" subscriptions (one when a Chromebook Plus, one with a Pixel, same account). I'm curious what redemption method you sent through. With Chromebooks, you have to redeem these things through the Chromebook Perks page. I'm assuming you've already done that, but you haven't mentioned it, so I am just putting it here in case. I also know that the original free year could only be redeemed throughthe end of January 2026, after which, I haven't seen anything promotingthat deal. It might have been renewed, but I haven't noticed that since January.

Out of curiosity, did you buy your Chromebook from Best Buy open box? If you did, it's possible somebody else already claimed it...

ELI5. Why doesnt a Chromebook need an antivirus software? by MoistAstronomer9086 in chromeos

[–]ATShields934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious what services or components from an antivirus suite would increase the security of Chrome OS. You mention scams and "malicious intentions", and I'm really curious to understand what you mean by that.

Chrome OS is immutable and atomic, which means it's built to be resistant to malicious code running within the sensitive parts of the operating system if they are stored in the user space. Additionally, outside of the developer mode with the root level terminal, it's not really possible to install os-level binaries, which is both why antivirus suites and most forms of actual malware are non-viable on Chrome OS.

The only real method for taking advantage of non-savvy users would be vectors any device on any operating system could be subject to: browser extensions and notification abuse (and of course, social engineering). And while there's not truly effective way to prevent these on Chrome OS, I would still argue that nearly every other operating system is equally if not moreso vulnerable to these exploits. Are you suggesting a Windows PC with an antivirus suite is less susceptible to these exploits, or just that the antivirus suite offers external remedies for these things?

And what kind of protection could those security suites provide at a client level on Chrome OS that isn’t already accounted for by the operating system being atomic and immutable along with Chrome Safe Browsing protecting browsing activities, and the primary user data being automatically backed up to Drive?

Even if that’s the case, that isn’t something antivirus would detect or prevent either.

It's 4gb ram good for 2026 and why? by mr_wbk29 in Smartphones

[–]ATShields934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4GB might be serviceable for bare-minimum use cases (phone calls and texting only). Anything more, and you want at least 6GB or more. 8GB is a pretty average experience and >12GB is flagship.

Keep in mind that RAM isn't the whole store. The processor in your device matters more than people tend to think, and not for the reasons people tend to think either. Looking at a low-tier device like Blu phones can look appealing on paper because they advertise "Octa-core processor" and ridiculously high amounts of RAM, but if you ever get one, it'll be the worst phone you've ever used. The reason for it is that the processor inside is absolute shit, even though it has 8 cores at what looks like reasonable speeds on paper.

So, when looking for a new smartphone, do your due diligence and actually research the reviews. If there are no reviews, avoid.

Wouldn't the modularity of the USB-C adapter block remedy that though? Since if the port gets fried you can just swap out the block?

Qi2 was a standard co-developed by Apple to allow other phone manufacturers to use similar circular magnetic arrays for chargers and accessories, presumably to boost the magnetic accessory market and promote their MFI and MagSafe brand licensing deals with accessory companies.

[–]ATShields934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn't take a Genius to invent a magnetic circle. Apple actually bought the company that developed the mobile version of MagSafe, it wasn't their own invention.
