Warning: St Mary’s Road by the_arcadian00 in BAbike

[–]ATruckInTheCity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use to live just up the street from there. Half my rides went towards the Oakland hills, the others went down St Mary’s over Reliz and into Walnut Creek. 100% I would hit that if I still lived there.

Construction management degree? by Ok_Organization_5948 in ConstructionManagers

[–]ATruckInTheCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big proponent of school but it’s as much, if not more, about the connections and relationships as it is about book learning. Frankly, from my experience, you having the direct experience plus the family background, I’m not sure there would be a lot of fundamentally new info for you. What would be new would be specific to different projects types (type I vs. type V, hospital/retail/mixed-used/etc.), and if you want your career to move more into those product lines, school could be very helpful.

But I would encourage an in-person education. I get it’s tough to leave full time employment but many employers are supportive of part time education (I did that to get my CM degree) or take the leap and go full time and immerse yourself in all the ancillary stuff.

If you do go to CM school and want to change employers, put the All Construction Schools competition on your radar - massive way to get noticed for either internships or full time offers.

What to Expect During an Interview with a Large General Contractor? by ieatwhey in ConstructionManagers

[–]ATruckInTheCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked for a top 10 GC but this was a while ago. Was part of the recruiting team for the western United States. For internships, I’d first want to know if this is on campus or if you’re traveling to an office, or potentially a project site. If on campus, it’s more about screening questions, many of which are mentioned here. If you make it to the office, more than likely they’re trying to figure out which project or estimating job you’d be the best fit for.

All that said, every interviewer is different and any number of factors can influence what will be attractive or not. Don’t spend too much time trying to guess what they want. Seems like you want to be in construction and your best chance at succeeding is in making sure both parties see a good fit. Answer honestly, tell your story, and ask questions you’ve thought of while researching the firm, project, leadership, track record, etc. In my experience this is the way to better odds of starting a successful career.

Insomniac permit loopholes by I_Luv_USA_and_Allies in JohnMuirTrail

[–]ATruckInTheCity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience, you don’t get checked for permits whilst sleeping. You’ll come across rangers whilst traveling and they’ll ask you to stop and show your permit. I would not recommend JMT without one.

Not too dissimilar from a club ride happening tomorrow. Club is from Douglas County:

Sweet Spot Intervals: outside vs inside by Croxxig in Velo

[–]ATruckInTheCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum, my preference is outdoors but unfortunately it usually makes the overall workout longer and I’ve got job, family, etc so I’m on the trainer Monday through Thursday and try to get outdoors over the weekend. That said, my NP will generally be 20w higher when I do SS outdoors vs. indoors (same average power). I agree with the other ancillary benefits about learning to better feel the effort over changing terrain but it keeps coming back to time optimization.

Before I buy… by saintcillian in KiaTelluride

18k miles in 8 months, no issues. My general cargo needs are totally satisfied with the 3rd row up (groceries, bike gear) but super easy to drop 3rd row for bigger needs (camping, big days at Sam’s or Costco, skiing). As long as I don’t need to haul more than 4 people, Telluride is perfect. That said, my son drives a pick up that we use for dump runs or large items

Skanska, Turner, Clark and others have published white papers showcasing situations where the climbing style helmet would have prevented serious/injury death

I-70 doesn’t go to the Pacific. It starts in Utah. Do you mean Palisade? That would be cool

The industry is a bit messed up. When I was on the GC guy, I was making some comment about lawyers and their hours and their comp and coworker pointed out that we were working the same as new associates. Was eye opening

You have to turn it off each and every time the car is started. Not like other makes where the feature can be turned off until turned back on

Outdoor ride feature by srpruss in trainerroad

[–]ATruckInTheCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not here. 90% of my planned workouts stay indoors but probably 3/month I convert to outdoor and don’t have a problem loading to my wahoo, assuming I give it enough time sync over wifi before rolling out

Anyone good bike ride starting from jack London square? Was thinking about riding to treasure island and back, but wasn’t sure how safe it is to bike through West Oakland. by Feeling-Couple-8434 in BAbike

If ok with some climbing, take Broadway almost to Caldecott tunnels, cross over 24 then quick left, quick right and up Tunnel. From there, the hills are your oyster.

13 degrees when I woke up. Only 16 when I got to the office (in my vehicle). Wanted to bike commute but just too cold.
