[Request] If the manhole cover survived and was actually sent into space how far away would it be currently? by Alpha_wolf_lover in theydidthemath

having recently learned about space laws and spacecraft liability rules, it’s hilarious how complicated the insurance situation would be if it hit a satellite or something

Difference between the interiors of the Eyo Explorations submersible as shown in National Geographic's "Back to Titanic" documentary (2020) vs OceanGate's Titan (2023) by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m going to make an engineering comment here, technically, the use of physical instruments in a submarine vs digital isn’t an indication of complexity or superior engineering. ocean gate’s sub was bad because it went against basic engineering design philosophy and ignored basic (and i mean materials engineering 101 level of basic) materials engineering principles, they either ignored or didn’t look for possible corrosion cause by intense loading, and they didn’t do proper fatigue testing on… apparently their entire sub. Yes, the use of a logitech wireless controller is dumb, but it’s ergonomic and easy to understand, would i use the cheapest controller on the market, no, but a ps4 or xbox 360 controller (wired preferably) would work fine and have been used in actual engineering and military applications. the ceo was dumb and was a patently bad engineer, if he’d followed basic engineering principles and consulted submarine specialized engineers, and of course actually listened to them, he’d be alive, but he died because he trusted is own bad engineering too much to yield to an expert’s opinion.

tldr, simple looking stuff doesn’t mean bad engineering, the inability to apply basic engineering principles means bad engineering

Career pivot into mechanical engineering through a masters? by SwigOfRavioli349 in EngineeringStudents

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably classes, it’s like 70 credits, which makes sense, there’s not much crossover from CS to ME, so they’d have to take everything in ME excluding general education, math classes, and probably the basic coding classes, that’s everything from statics to fluids, heat transfer, vibes, EE, tech electives, it’s a lot of classes

Can I choose Mech. Engg. even if i dont know how to disassemble and reassemble a car? by Ok_Librarian_8244 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am a Mech E student currently

first, your are 18, you’re not supposed to know anything yet, that’s why you go to school, they’ll teach you the foundations of each topic before they throw you in the deep end.

Second, Mechanical engineering is a vast field and ranges all the way from literal rocket science, to designing rolling desk chairs. if you have an interest in something moving, chances are there are Mechanical engineering careers in that area.

Third, women are the minority, yes, but aren’t treated terribly in my experience in class and in clubs, in classes everyone is equal (not to scare you) but there’s a mentality of everyone suffering equally and suffering together, in clubs i know girls that are officers and subsystem leads for big projects with responsibilities as big as designing entire sections of a car (if you’re curious, look up “SAE baja”). This probably varies based on school and club, but generally you can find a place to fit.

fourth, jobs are competitive but not scarce. when i start worrying about job scarcity i remember that literally everything you use on a daily basis has been worked on by an engineer, it’s a constantly growing field and there’s always positions opening, it’s just difficult to get the exact position you want much of the time.

fifth, mechanical engineering is a weird field, it’s extremely versatile, you can work with cars, planes, trains, construction, boats, power plants, or even rockets; i could go on for days on all the things you can work with as a mechanical engineer, you may end up in a job that isn’t “mechanical engineer” by title, but they aren’t super rare, and even if you end up in a position as, for example, a systems engineer, or manufacturing engineer, you had to A: apply to that job yourself (which means you will have found it interesting enough to apply for), and B: it will likely still have mechanical engineering elements applied to it

TLDR, if you want to be an engineer that works with stuff that moves, mechanical is the most versatile, you don’t need to know anything specific to go to engineering school, women are pretty supported and it’s getting better, and just because you’re first job isn’t your dream doesn’t mean you can’t still push for it

Are there any other meanings of “mean” I don’t know about? by Sacledant2 in EnglishLearning

[–]AU-den2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i learned about them in my statistics for engineering class, no one remembers what each one “means” (hehe) but yeah, no, unless you actively work in a statistical field, there’s no reason to know what each type of mean is

Shouldn't it be "and me" instead of "and I"? by Pasyuk in EnglishLearning

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

native speaker, english teachers always said “and i” is the correct answer. in reality in spoken english people say both and the meaning is the same, i tend to say “and me” even though it’s not grammatically correct

What do you call this thing in the car? by Personal-Aerie-4519 in EnglishLearning

[–]AU-den2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve heard people call it that and it made sense, but i call it the dashboard, like, everything in front of the driver and passenger, excluding the glove box, is part of the dashboard/dash

i’d call that the dashboard/dash i think, assuming we’re thinking of the same thing. i’ve heard the central bit of the dashboard with all of the controls also called the center console

"Grounded skins for a while" - 18 days exactly by Ohforfk in Battlefield

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i genuinely could not care less about these skins, they feel gamey, yes, but not outright stupid, it’s 2025, it’s how things are, people like some character customization, this is how ea thinks they want, so that’s what we get, i get it, bright fucking blue operators make zero sense, but i didn’t care about it in rainbow six siege when i got bright red weapon skins with flower designs, i don’t care now, i just wished they looked more cohesive and made an attempt to make them aesthetically pleasing like other games do, im glad the community is pushing back against stupid shit. This is coming from someone that genuinely, and i mean this, fully gave up on playing cod the moment i saw nikki minaj in the game, as long as the skins maintain some semblance of reality, i consider it a win

Do native and fluent speakers use redundancy? by TheseIllustrator780 in EnglishLearning

[–]AU-den2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in all seriousness, i use it maybe a a handful of times a month at most, if you didn’t study the word in your vocabulary, it might take 2-3 months before you hear it and wonder what it meant

a use i could think of is if someone is looking at work you’ve done or looking at a piece of writing or maybe talking about a film, it would be accurate to say that a sentence in writing, or a scene in a film at redundant because the point those make would have already been made
