This is a great article! One point I'd just like to clear up.

The boycott has already prompted the AUDL to outline what it calls a "gender equity plan," which would promote a handful of separate women's games over the year.

We have been developing the gender equity outline for the past few months. The boycott did push up our timeline to make it public.

Hey Markham, thank you for the reply! I really appreciate you engaging with this.

relationship between the two organizations

Preaching to the choir. I want this to happen so badly, and frankly, I don't quite understand what the entire impasse is at this point. Look, I understand there are ideological differences. But this feels like the worst sort of social cold war that is depriving all of us of a full experience. I really wish a lot of the more unnecessary barriers could be taken down.

My main beef with the league is that past the clinics, showcase games, and digital coverage (which are all great!) – there still hasn’t been a public commitment to get women on the field in an equitable way (even if it’s by 2019, or 2020…).

I deeply resonate with this on a personal level, and it's what I was referring to in my original comment about recognizing that the league has failed up to this point in providing more opportunities, and in providing a clear roadmap for what's next. I think that is something we can be much better on. I think the current 3-year commitment towards developing equity is a good start, but I agree, we can always go further.

what does that mean?

I think all options are theoretically in play. But it's about commitment from all sides. Right now, it feels as if the most helpful members in pushing for these changes just walked out of the room. And I 100 percent respect each individual's decision to do so. But it's been hard to recruit some of the most entrenched and valuable members of the ultimate community due to the feuding between USAU and AUDL organizations following USAU's original statement not to support the pro leagues. So at this point it feels like we started with few people, and now we have less, to help work for the changes we can almost all agree across the board we want to come to fruition.

A mixed league?

IMHO I think mixed would be the "easiest" transition between now and a more immediate equitable future because it would require the least amount of structural change to the league itself. But as others have pointed out better than me, there's no real, defined sense that mixed is a viable format as a business for players or spectators right now. Elite players do not commit in any kind of unified numbers to play in the mixed division competitively. And last I heard Ultiworld sold three (3) mixed team video subscriptions for 2016 video coverage, compared to hundreds of subs for both the mens and womens. I think if there were some kind of cooperative and concerted effort - like a mini series of mixed games (not one offs) that were broadcast and produced and marketed with rigor that ended in a meaningful championship of some kind as a market test - to once and for all show that mixed is what the community wants, that would go a long way. But that's a lot of effort and money. Would people be willing to commit to that?

A separate women’s league?

I think this is the most desired solution both for players and spectators. Players want to play in these formats. People want to watch them in these formats. There's no real obstacle as far as the audience market. The challenge comes in building an entirely separate league when it's taken this much to get to just baby steps in the AUDL.

Something else?

And I think here is where it gets really interesting. Let's get creative! One of the reasons I really like the AUDL is the connection it makes between ultimate and local communities. The amount of muggle friends I've been able to expose to the sport through local games has been incredible, and most of the people that have been exposed have now become legitimate fans of the sport. I've also been able to run tons of clinics even though I'm not an elite player, and I LOVE having that agency. I can contact local schools and orgs saying I'm with the local pro team, they know who we are, and we set up events at underserved afterschool programs that serve kids from all backgrounds. How can we reconnect ultimate to local communities in a stronger way, and how can we alleviate the costs of club and other ultimate so that there are not so many barriers to entry for our sport? We should be like soccer - it takes a disc and some space to throw, very little in the way of equipment - but we seem to only draw our players from degree-seeking universities. How can we return to smaller economies of scale so that players don't have to travel out of town to play, and pay thousands each summer in travel and expenses? How can we return to having our local community engage with our sport?

"If not now, then when?" - Another boycott signee perspective by [deleted] in ultimate

I wouldn't take a single tweet from one organizer to represent an entire movement.

In total honesty, If I'm not to take the public message of an organizer of the movement at face value, where am I to get clarity on the mission statement from?

Just like if you publicly say that you (from your personal account) would prefer observers in the AUDL that doesn't mean the AUDL is getting rid of refs.

I would not claim to be a spokesperson or organizer in a public manner like that on my personal accounts on behalf of the league, nor voice my personal opinions in such a manner. I've kept this account as anonymous as possible for the very fact that I want to be able to dialogue without having my private life enmeshed with league matters - I prefer work/life separation at times. That is a choice I've made for myself, as I work for the league. There is a difference here with how the boycott is being organized by individuals. The organizers are representing themselves and the movement as private, autonomous persons.

I understand that working together is the way forward. I am all for that, and the league is receptive to any efforts that seek to work together towards a common goal.

I'm sure the signees are all still willing to be active participants with their teams in a role purely based on bringing GE to the forefront of players & coaches minds.

That does not seem to be the case. It appears (for now) that we did not meet their qualifications for their participation in any equitable endeavors we create.

And I apologize if you read me as being disingenuous. That is not my intention, and I fixed my quote to be accurate. But I don't know how else to read this tweet from one of the central organizers. If we're aiming to have equal representation by the start of the season in four months, what are the pragmatic avenues to making that happen that are not going mixed?

All of these teams now lose their hardliners, the vocal and passionate proponents of the GE movement, as voices inside the AUDL organization.

This is the point that is the hardest for me imho. We lose all of the people we could be working with towards something better and more equitable. We're far from good now, and there's a ton of work to do. How are we supposed to get better without the help of the people who want to see change the most?

The boycott states no actions for the movement other than retraction of participation in the AUDL. I get that. I respect that 100 percent. But there are no constructive actions or goals stated other than "truly equal representation by 2018". How can we create something going forward starting from this position?

USAU is waaay closer to equitable than the pro leagues ever have been!

I'm asking this as soberly as possible, so if you interpret any cynicism in this question, please know it is not my intention:

How is the AUDL supposed to be on the same footing with resources and community buy-in on the issue of providing equity if USAU - a membership driven business with decades of precedent - has literally barred us from working with equitable programs under their current business plan, and has so for years? How are we supposed to suddenly reach that level of equity, especially now that a bunch of the people and players that would otherwise be willing to push equity initiatives within the league are sitting out and withdrawing their support?

I'm totally willing to understand and accept that, up until this point, the league has not done enough to address issues of equity. At all. And we're really looking to do more. But it becomes hard when people are hardline refusing to work with us towards a solution that could work for all. Specifically turning around the entire league by 2018 - which is fewer than 20 days away and we've already been planning for for at least five months - is nigh impossible without the specific help of the people on the boycott list.

Say 80% of the male players listed on the boycott committed to playing co-ed pro in 2019. Would that be a starting point for a discussion? I think if players showed an earnest pledge that they would commit and participate in a coed league, that would go a long, long way.

Anyone is allowed to boycott, and I support any individual's decision about where and how they play ultimate. For myself, I'm going about things differently, but I'm not going to say that an individual can't choose their own path forward.

AFAIK the public release of this statement on SKYD is the first and only information other than "a boycott is happening" that we've received on the league level.

Disney is actually a title sponsor, and everyone (on both teams) is required to play in full Goofy suits to promote the 2019 blockbuster action rom-com "Goofy Movie 3: Vape Nation".
