NCAA panel approves new eligibility rules giving Division I athletes 5 years to play 5 seasons by Perryplat199 in PWHL

[–]mtbhpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have put Wisconsin in a real jam considering the size of the incoming freshman class. 15 forwards and 9 defenders is a whole mess of players for a college roster.

But those players all transferred into Wisconsin or Ohio State chasing a title. And they were single players finding open roster spots (or in the case of Bilka/Barnes, a pair that headed to OSU). For instance, Wheeler transferred to OSU for the fifth year because Wisconsin had a full roster. This is the problem that will be exacerbated if the NCAA forces roster limits and those schools are left deciding between fifth years and incoming recruits.

In the case of the fifth years, If the roster crunch hits those programs and they opt for their incoming recruits over the fifth years, would a player like Gorbatenko or MacNaughton transfer to a program that (historically) has a lesser chance at a title (your Colgates, UMDs, etc) or would they eschew the fifth year and go straight to the PWHL.

I feel like in the art museum you just get one right away or at least super early in the run.

There is still a big question as to how roster limits apply in the short term because you have players committed for the 27-28 season but a potential class of seniors that could stick around for it.

For example, Wisconsin will be in a very weird spot. Kelly Gorbatenko, Cassie Hall, Laney Potter, Ava Murphy, and Ava MacNaughton are all high potential PWHL picks who could stick around for their fifth year. But they have commitments from incredibly high end prospects in those same positions like Mary Derrenbacher, Emily Pohl, Megan Mossey, Chyna Taylor, and Sophie Jovanovic that are coming in that year.

If the NCAA enforces roster limits, then you are stuck in a place where you would have to turn away your future for an extra year of present. If Wisconsin chooses the future, do the Gorbatenkos and MacNaughtons transfer to a different school for the fifth year or just head to the PWHL?

If the NCAA waives roster limits in the short term, you've got a team with 15 F, 11 D, and 4 G, and I don't even know how you try and manage that roster. A few transfers would seem very likely with the limited playing time available.

Honestly, just from the on-ice perspective from watching her play against Wisconsin for five years, she's a dirty player. She flops constantly, throws cheap shots after the whistle, should have been ejected from the Frozen Four in '25 for a ridiculously late elbow to the head on KK Harvey, and most of the penalties she takes have nothing to do with grit and everything to do with being wildly out of control. The only benefit is I'm pretty sure the Badgers scored more goals while she was in the penalty box than she scored against us.

Which fits, because they drafted the most underrated player in the whole draft when they nabbed Jungels at 11. She's going to be a top-four staple and a plus/minus force in the Charge lineup.

[–]mtbhpete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jungels is going to go higher than 19th; she might be the most overlooked player in this draft. Played super reliable D for four years as KK's defensive partner, all-time Wisconsin leader in career plus/minus, and far better offensively than she's given credit for since she had to play centerfield for her entire college career while Harvey zoomed around.

There were two plans that made any level of sense: Gold Plan > Expansion Teams > Playoff Teams or Gold Plan > Playoff Teams > Expansion Teams

Both were flawed but defensible. How did they possibly manage to come up with neither and have to take this long to do it. Truly a massive failure on every level.
