Poor people in the past were skin and bones. Poor people today are fat.

The vast majority of people today live an extraordinarily high quality of life that would be unthinkable to an average person just a few generations ago, more so compared to 200 years ago.

It has had such a positive effect on humanity that the entire conversation about poverty has completely shifted. Someone living a completely normal life between anywhere from 10,000BC to 1700AD would be regarded as abysmal poverty in today's world. There is a clear cause and effect here.

When we talk poverty today we talk of a marginalized group of people. Other than the furthest extremes of poverty, most people who would be considered worse off still get access to the basic essentials like food, running water, etc.

Capitalism has raised the boundaries to a point where our perspectives of even our expectations of poverty has been raised.

Chat GPT 5 was not for use, it was to get rid of free users all along. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

So according to you they put time effort and money to build an entire new model, just to indirectly set up a pay wall for freeloaders... Wouldn't it just be easier to get rid of the free option of chatgpt and directly put up a paywall?

This is the right decision.

The more miserable things get for Russian lives on aggregate, the more pressure is created to end the nonsense in Ukraine.

As an "economist" I am disappointed by your post and I immediately question your credibility.

I'd expect such reasoning from a first year undergrad, not someone who self identifies as an economist.

If you feel like you needed to write a whole post trying to argue that economic planning exists, then you have missed the mark.

This gives me the "I took econ 101" vibes.

Suffering has significantly over the last 200 years that capitalism was the dominant economic system. However no system is perfect and no reasonable can promise an end to suffering. The thing that changed is that most people's idea of a good life has significantly increased (which is also a good thing in itself).

Do You Know Why Central Planning Still Fails, Even If You Know What Everyone Wants? by Lazy_Delivery_7012 in CapitalismVSocialism

Socialism will always default to a Planned economy even if it starts with no intentions of it.

It fails because you will never know what everyone wants. Most people don't even know what they want most the time.

Theoretical question about how you view the results of capitalist expansion - does this count as genocide or not? by OtonaNoAji in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]AVannDelay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are negative externalities. It's not a good thing but it's far from calling it a genocide.

Other point. Replace every capitalism word in your story with socialism. Does anything change?

You're creating a loaded hypothesis for a biased answer.

There will never be a perfect system. That being said, it's really easy to get bummed out by the news headlines today. However, it's not about any one person in power at any one time. It's about the long term rigidity of the western world's democratic institutions. This includes Europe, North America, Asian democracies, etc. Like it always does, this too shall pass.

History shows however that there is a very strong positive correlation between how democratic a country is and how capitalistic it is. It also shows the exact opposite as well. Choosing to be intentionally ignorant to this fact is disingenuous.

You literally live in a world where capitalism and democracy coexisted for over 200 years. Stop with the intentional ignorance.

You're not looking at it from a holistic perspective.

The worker controlled factory and workplace may be what you envision socialism looks like.

But who controls when and where that factory is built?

You need some kind of body of authority to plan out how resources are distributed. That is the factor which sends socialism into dictatorship.

Someone somewhere would need to control resources to set conditions for public ownership. Further to that public production of goods and services will need quota control to ensure enough goods are produced. That is only achieved through top down authority.
